Aggressive Mosquitoes Are Invading Vermont

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Tropical Storm Irene brought heavy rains to Vermont and large pools of standing water creating the perfect breeding ground for a new wave of uniquely aggressive mosquitoes.

The Burlington Free Press reports the mosquitoes carry the potentially fatal disease Eastern equine encephalitis, and residents should remain alert well into the fall.

The Health Department is urging residents to wear heavy clothing and bug spray if they need to be outside.

The disease is particularly virulent to livestock and killed an emu last week at a farm in Brandon, Vt.

The disease affects horses, llamas, alpacas, and people.
