You have successfully emailed the post. The 2012 Republican presidential candidates took the stage at Reagan Library tonight for the most significant debate of the GOP primary season so far.
The debate quickly turned into a showdown between former frontrunner Mitt Romney and Rick Perry, who made his debut with a double-digit lead over the rest of the Republican field. Their sparring largely overshadowed the other six candidates onstage, and marked a new turn in what is fast becoming a two-man contest.
Elsewhere onstage, Michele Bachmann faded into the field, Jon Huntsman gave his best performance yet, and Ron Paul managed to engage Perry in a battle with the rest of the field. Check out our full debate coverage below.
Auto-refresh: On | Off Sort: Oldest First | Newest First 9:50 PM | And quite abruptly, the debate is over. Some brief wrap-up notes:
Rick Perry was incontrovertibly the center of attention tonight, but did not come away the clear winner. Although he is leading by over 10 points in most national polls, Perry didn't look like a frontrunner, with candidates landing blows on the left and right.
After an initial sparring match with Perry, Mitt Romney kept his head down and focused his answers on Obama.
After two strong debate performances, Michele Bachman's third appearance was forgettable, proving once and for all that her candidacy has peaked — perhaps fatally. Rep. Ron Paul succeeded at drawing Rick Perry into a fight with the rest of the GOP field — a major victory for his insurgent campaign.
Jon Huntsman was the breakout performance of the night . With the exception of a few good jabs at Romney and Perry, he stayed largely above the fray, while giving clear and consistent responses to questions about the economy and immigration. His performance could give his single-digit poll numbers a boost, putting the heat on Romney. In the event of a Romney-Perry murder-suicide, Huntsman showed that he is ready to step up to the plate.
Asked if he loses sleep over the executions he has overseen as governor of Texas, Perry replies, "No sir, I've never struggled with that at all." He later adds: "Americans understand justice."The response is a big hit with the crowd.
9:43 PM | Romney would get rid of Ben Bernanke."I'd be looking for someone new."
9:35 PM | Perry falters on national security question. He started out by applauding Obama for killing bin Laden, and then tried to revert back to the economy, but his execution was disjointed and confusing. He stuttered a little, and finished it by circling back to bin Laden.
9:27 PM | Romney gets the Tea Party question.Brian Williams opens up the new segment by asking Romney, straight up, if he is a member of the Tea Party. "You don't carry a card in the Tea Party," Romney replied, and basically went on to define the Tea Party in terms of as his own campaign platform.
9:21 PM | Huntsman 9:19 PM | Ron Paul immediately turns immigration question to drug policy. 9:15 PM | As the debate moves to immigration, candidates have largely avoided attacking Perry.Immigration is perhaps the biggest weak spot in Perry's conservative record. The lack of direct attacks indicates that all of the Republicans realize that a) he is the only candidate with any real immigration experience at all and b) that the party is going to have to get more Hispanic voters on board to win in 2012 and beyond.
9:09 PM | Romney defends Perry on HPV vaccine. The stage erupted over questions about Perry's 2007 executive order mandating that pre-teen girls get vaccinated for HPV. The debate quickly spiraled, with Santorum accusing Perry of being a fake conservative and Perry saying, "I am against cancer." Unbelievably, Romney managed to rise above it and turn the debate back to reality. Asked if he agreed with Perry's decision, Romney made a pivotal choice to eschew social conservatives and stand by his main rival. He then quickly turned the focus back to Obama. It was a big moment for Romney, who has been under a lot of pressure to cater to the GOP's right-wing flank.
8:50 PM | Zing! Rick Perry just went after Karl Rove.Responding to a question about his former political adviser Karl Rove, Perry responds: "Karl Rove has been over the top for some time now — I'm not responsible for Karl Rove anymore." That seems to resolve any lingering questions over whether Perry and the Bush/Rove camp get along.
8:49 PM | Rick Perry says (again) that Social Security a Ponzi scheme.Perry doubled down on his book's criticism of Social Security, says the system needs to be fixed.
8:47 PM | Ron Paul is going after Perry onstage AND on Twitter.During the commercial break, Paul's official Twitter account attacked Perry for his letter praising Hillary Clinton's 1993 healthcare reform effort.
8:38 PM | Perry is off to a strong start.Perry has done an impressive job dodging Brian Williams' questions and sticking to a simple message. He has barely looked at the moderators, instead engaging the cameras directly and working the stage.
8:31 PM | Bachmann reiterates opposition to Obamacare (again). After breakout performances in her first two debates, Bachmann's star has clearly faded. Her strategy seems to be staying above the fray, but so far, she has just come off as detached. She got two questions in the first 25 minutes, but failed to engage any of her opponents.
8:21 PM | Perry slams Romneycare.Moderator John Harris turns the conversation to Romneycare, asking if anyone agrees it was a good choice for Massachusetts. Perry is right there: "No. It was a great opportunity for us as a people to see what will not work, and that is an individual mandate.""What the people in the state of Texas don't want is a health care plan like the one Gov. Romney put in place in Massachusetts."
8:15 PM | Jon Huntsman tries to insert himself in the Perry/Romney battle.Addressing Romney' says: "To my good friend mitt, 47 just ain't going to cut it friend." Huntsman also went after Romney's new jobs plan, which calls for going after cheaters like China: "I have to say, Mitt, now is not the time, during a recession, to enter a trade war."
8:11 PM | And we're off! First tussle between Romney and Perry. After Romney took an indirect swipe at career politicians, Perry calls him out for his low jobs record as Massachusetts Governor. Romney goes on the defense, noting how red Texas is. Says that if Perry compares raw numbers in Texas and Massachusetts it would be like Al Gore saying he invented the Internet. Perry zings back: "Michael Dukakis created jobs three times faster than you did Mitt."
8:07 PM | Mitt Romney's up next — talks up private-sector record.Talks up Massachusetts record a little, but then launches right into his private-sector record. "Our president doesn't understand how the economy works, I do because I've lived it."
8:04 PM | Perry kicks it off.Launches right into 'Texas Miracle' speech: "Americans are focused...on who on this stage can get America working"Williams asks him about low-wage jobs, and Perry fires right back, saying 95% of the jobs are not low wage. He then successfully evades the real question, but delivers a strong answer anyway.
8:03 PM | Moderator Brian Williams says debate will start with economy and jobs.Candidates will have 1 minute to answer, 30 seconds for rebuttal. No opening or closing statements.
7:59 PM | Paul's Perry attack ads are running on MSNBC.The ad, part of six-figure media buy, call's Perry 'Al Gore's cheerleader,' while Paul is 'Reagan's man.' Perry campaign said today that Perry voted for Reagan even when he was a Democrat.Read more about the attack ad here:
7:49 PM | The candidates have taken the stage.Romney and Perry are standing next to each other, flanked by Paul and Bachmann. Strategic placement to force the frontrunners to engage each other.
7:39 PM | Jon Huntsman has a sinus infection. The 2012 long-shot candidate woke up this morning feeling ill and without his voice, according to his campaign. He will participate tonight, but his voice has dropped an octave or two, we're told.
7:29 PM | Is Barack Obama liberal?Chris Matthews just asked former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs just that. Gibbs said he calls Obama "Mr. President — I call him a friend," but would not answer the question.

Oh, and of course Gibbs would not answer the question about Obama being a liberal. 1) liberal is a nasty word in America...only accepted in big mega cities with ethically and morally challenged people; 2) Gibbs is a spinning liar and always has been...he learned it from his friend Obama Reply 3 12 Flag as Offensive Lying Hypocrite Liberal What are these? It's really the ignorance and years of brainwashing of the American people that leads you to view him as nuts. He's the smartest and most well SELF educated man on the stage. Hands down. 9.57 pm. My take-away? Perry has proved himself an extreme, inarticulate, incurious W clone. He doubled down on the vicious attacks on social security; and his rhetoric was off-key. Huntsman emerged as an actual candidate; Romney kicked ass. Bachmann is wearing thinner and thinner. Paul is Paul. Santorum is a Vatican crank. Gingrich is an angry old man. Cain has no business being up there. Perry's poor performance gives Palin an opening. And an actual argument that people can understand about economic policy did not emerge. Where's this headline, Grace and Zeke???? Reply 1 0 Flag as Offensive clamboslice on Sep 8, 2:32 AM said: Romney and Perry both did well. As far as "science" goes, I guess few people have heard that down in Switzerland a bunch of guys at CERN showed that clouds can be formed by cosmic rays. For your edification, cosmic rays come from the sun and the amount of them emitted VARIES considerably. So, it turns out that probably it is the sun after all that affects how warm the earth is. Imagine that. This was a recent development that won't get much notice in the NYTimes for sure. Perry is correct that social security is a Ponzi scheme, but Romney is also correct that this scheme works. The reason it works is 1. all workers are required to join the scheme 2. you can't ask for your money back all at once. Perry is correct that the younger workers are going to be screwed by social security. Huntsman is a twerp and a fool, bragging about how he can speak Chinese didn't impress me. Cain is great but an impossible long shot. Newt reamed out that fool asking dumb questions to cause fights. I can imagine any of these people would wipe the floor with Obama in a debate (no teleprompter allowed in debates). Reply Join the discussion with Business Insider
