The Most Satisfied Countries In The World

Ireland is hurting under harsh austerity measures and unemployment is fairly high but 68% of Irish people are satisfied with their life and 79% expect it to be satisfying five years from now.

This compares with 59% of people in the OECD countries that are satisfied with their life.

We've used the OECD Better Life Index and put together 12 countries with the highest life satisfaction and combined it with work hours and their sense of safety.

Note: The average OECD homicide rate is 2.2 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.

These EU Countries Had Their Employment Levels Crushed By The Great Recession

We may be closer to the next recession than the last one, but Eurofound published some figures this week that gave an insight into employment trends during the turbulent period between the second quarter of 2008 and the second quarter of 2010.

The recession hit EU countries in different ways when it came to employment. Some were affected only very slightly, losing a small percentage of their work force. Others, towards the top of our list, were impacted a little bit more.

Though the figures here represent the change in employment from Q2 2008 to Q2 2010, it is interesting to note when unemployment started to rise in each nation and when it stopped. For some, the decline was already coming before 2008.

Overall there was a net loss of 5 million jobs in the EU. The Eurozone saw a 2.3 percent drop in employment during the period.

BEHIND BARS: Europe's 20 Most Imprisoned Countries

The International Center for Prison Studies regularly compiles a list detailing the world's prison population.

The U.S. imprisoned nation on the planet. According to the organization, 756 people for every 100,000 are behind bars in America.

However, there are some European countries that aren't far behind.

Using the number of people in prison per 100,000 of the population, we've ranked Europe's most imprisoned countries.

NB -- There's definitely a geographical trend here, but there are also some wildcards that may surprise you.

Have a look at this list and you can work out which European nation is drinking the most per capita.

We've also thrown in the number of breweries in each country and the tax revenue they generate. (nb. this only represents breweries associated with the Brewers of Europe and not independent brewers).
