12 Awesome Things You Never Knew About Herman Cain

herman cainAfter months of languishing on the sidelines of the GOP presidential race, Herman Cain has skyrocketed to the top of the national polls and now looks like he might actually be a real contender for the Republican nomination in 2012.

Until Cain and his "9-9-9" tax plan dominated Tuesday's presidential debate and vaulted into the national spotlight, few outside of the Tea Party know much about Cain, other than that he is black and likes pizza.

That is largely because, until this week, Cain's presidential campaign was virtually non-existent. Eschewing the fundraisers and early voting state visits typical of most campaigns, Cain and his staff have spent the last few weeks promoting his book, This Is Herman Cain! My Journey to the White House.

Released last week, the book is now No. 4 of the New York Times bestsellers list. But assuming you haven't picked it up yet, we read it so you don't have to.

The book offers some interesting insight into the candidate's background and what he plans to do if he gets elected to the Oval Office.

Matt Taibbi Lists The 5 Things The Occupy Wall Street Protesters Should Demand

x You have successfully emailed the post.

matt taibbiImage: wiki commons

The man who called Goldman Sachs a "great vampire squid" has some advice for Occupy Wall Street.

Not that he doesn't think they're doing things well. In fact, he thinks the logic behind the protester's lack of demands is ingenious.

But if they were to figure out their specific demands. Here's where he, per his article in Rolling Stone today, thinks they should start:

1. Break up the monopolies. He's talking about the 20 or so "too big to fail" companies in our country that could single-handedly take down our economy.

2. Pay for your own bailouts. "A tax of 0.1 percent on all trades of stocks and bonds and a 0.01 percent tax on all trades of derivatives would generate enough revenue to pay us back for the bailouts, and still have plenty left over to fight the deficits the banks claim to be so worried about..."

3. No public money for private lobbying. Pretty self-explanatory.

4. Tax hedge-fund gamblers. Right now, because of the carried-interest tax break, they're only paying about 15%.

5. Change the way bankers get paid. Bonuses shouldn't be paid up-front. They should be contingent upon performance.

Actually, the groups coalescing around the Occupy Wall Street movement have started to mention demands, though they aren't official. Here's a video of the pep talk they had before yesterdays Millionaires March. They specifically mention keeping the New York State Millionaires tax alive and well:

GERMAN MP: We Should Speed Things Up

Yesterday, Bloomberg reported that European lawmakers were in talks to accelerate plans for the European Stability Mechanism, a permanent Eurozone bailout fund.

Stock markets responded positively to these developments.

Earlier today, a senior official from German Chancellor Angela Merkel's party told Reuters that he supports speeding things up.  From Reuters:

Nobert Barthle of the Christian Democrats (CDU), who sits on parliament's budget committee, said an earlier introduction of the permanent European Stability Mechanism (ESM), due in mid-2013, would help respond more forcefully to the crisis.

"I think it would make sense to push further in this direction," Barthle told Reuters, arguing that the ESM, with an effective lending capacity of 500 billion euros, will include Collective Action Clauses (CACs) prevent one bondholder from blocking a debt restructuring deal at the expense of others."

The ESM could come as early as mid-2012.

In a wonderful use of the UK's Freedom of Information Act, anonymous Twitter user FOIMonkey asked London's Metropolitan Police what "other" meant in official reports of items confiscated by police officers guarding the houses of Parliament (h/t CNBC.com).

The document released reveals a great insight into British political protest (11 shaving foam cans confiscated in July?).

We made a list of our favorites from the document, though there are many more (including one -- "Mud Larking" -- that remains a mystery).

Here Are The 11 CRAZIEST Things In Rick Perry's Manifesto

x You have successfully emailed the post.

rick perry tea partyImage: Rita Quinn via Flikr

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been taking a lot of heat over some of the more controversial claims made in his 2010 small government treatise Fed Up! Our Fight To Save America From Washington.

The book is a fiery, anti-Washington treatise that lays bare Perry's ideas on the dangers of federal overreach and the primacy of the 10th Amendment. Incredulous pundits and reporters are heralding it as a virtual gold mine of opposition ammo for any 2012 candidate — Republican or Democrat — looking to torpedo Perry's White House bid.

In some ways, they are probably right. In the book, Perry affirms the death panel myth, lambastes, and calls Social Security a "Ponzi scheme" — and that's just a few of his incendiary claims.

But Perry does not appear to be shying away from the controversial positions he lays out in his book. During last night's GOP debate, he stood by his Ponzi scheme comparison, adding "maybe it's time to have some provocative language in this country."

Perry's fidelity to his book is an indication that he believes that the book's claims will resonate with the people who matter — American voters, who polls show are overwhelmingly pessimistic about the government's ability to get anything done.

Whether Fed Up! ends up being Perry's gift or his curse remains to be seen, but one thing about the book is certain: This is no ordinary — re: mind-numbingly boring — campaign memoir. It is an ideological manifesto that gives rare, unadulterated insight into how the presidential candidate, Perry, views the size and role of the federal government he now wants to lead.

The 3 Worst Things To Lie About On Your Car Insurance

x You have successfully emailed the post. liar-liarA recent study by eCar found that lying is absolutely rampant on car insurance applications -- and that women lie even more than men.

Women (68%) out-fibbed men (32%) on their license length and had their policy subsequently revoked, while 53% of women versus men (47%) lied about their "no claims" bonus, reported eCar.

We talked to Amy Danise of Insure.com to find out what else drivers are lying about and why these lies can be expensive.

Annual mileage and the use of the car. Not driving a lot is a good thing because that lowers your risk of an accident or claim. But while it seems pretty easy to toss out a raw number and assume the agent won't find out, if you live in a state where you have to do a smog test or there's a record of your odometer reading, that will record your mileage and you might have to pay out more in claims, she says.Who uses the car. It's imperative your agent knows who is getting behind the wheel, though it's not always easy to catch if a sister or elderly mother moves in, for example. So depending on the driver's record and age, if there were any accident you could suffer one of two consequences, says Danise. "The insurance company could agree to cover it, but charge for back premiums, saying you owe them money for the coverage you should have had all along, or they could say they won't cover the claim because they didn't know about it. You could have thousands of dollars that you're responsible for."Where you park your car. "Part of your price is based on your zip code, so if it happens to be a spot with a lot of car theft, you're going to get charged a higher rate," Danise says. But let's say a tree falls on your car while it's parked outside your home overnight. In that instance, you would probably get charged back premiums for the actual location of the car.

With car insurers using sophisticated analytical technology to track how you use the car and mileage-based insurance programs like State Farm's installing devices inside the car to track driver's habits, it has become "infinitely harder" to tell a lie and get away with it. And now that you know the consequences, why would you want to?

11 Things You Should Know About The U.S. Postal Service Before It Collapses

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Facing a projected $6.4 billion loss this year, the United States Postal Service may be forced to shut down this month if Congress doesn't take action.

A cushy relationship with the postal workers unions and flailing efforts to stem customer migration to the Internet have pushed the Postal Service to the brink of insolvency. The NYT reports that the agency will be unable to make to make its $5.5 billion payment to its employee healthcare plan by the Sept. 30 deadline.

In a desperate attempt to avoid collapse, the U.S. Post Master General Patrick Donahoe will ask Congress today to approve the elimination of Saturday delivery and allow the agency to break its union contract to lay off up to 120,000 workers. Without dramatic cuts, the federal government will be forced to choose between letting the agency default on its pension obligations or bailing it out to the tune of more than $50 billion.

In the end, however, these are all short-term solutions to a greater problem: The Postal Service, in its current form, is no longer needed in an era of private overnight delivery and digital communication. The agency's long-term survival will instead depend on its ability to reinvent the postal monopoly to regain relevance and profitability.

The 15 Wackiest Things People Have Listed On Their Resumes

Given that 45 percent of human resources managers say they spend less than a minute, on average, on each job application they see, it’s understandable that some people might go overboard in trying to bring some individuality to their work history. But would you list your unique ability to do the moonwalk in the “special skills” section of your resume?

That’s actually not the wackiest resume mistake CareerBuilder uncovered in a survey of 2,600 employers nationwide, who were asked to recall the most unusual resumes they’d ever seen. It seems safe to assume none of these people were hired, but since CareerBuilder didn’t specifically ask, I guess there’s an outside shot that one of these tactics actually worked. (Although probably not the one about being arrested for assaulting a former boss.)

Click here to see the strangest resume blunders >

Lessons Learned

Can’t you be even a little imaginative in putting together your resume? No, says CareerBuilder’s vice president of human resources, Rosemary Haefner. “Creativity and personal touches may seem tempting to some job seekers, but many times, it’s a disqualifying distraction.”

Instead, Haefner suggests job seekers stick with the basics:

Stay relevant. Customize your resume to each individual position, highlighting the experience that makes you best-suited to that particular post.Stay readable. If there’s no white space on your resume, reformat it to make it easier on the eyes. A wall of unbroken gray text is off-putting–especially if it’s the fiftieth resume someone’s seen that day.Write a compelling professional summary. Ditch the ‘Objective’ line in favor of a two-sentence description of your relevant experience. This is the ‘hook’ that can convince a recruiter, HR pro, or hiring manager to spend a little more time on your application.Proofread. It’s too easy for hiring managers to disqualify you based on a typo-if you don’t care about making sure your resume is perfect, what does that say about your level of conscientiousness? Proofread it yourself, and before sending it out, ask a few friends to proofread your resume for you.

What are your best tips for getting the attention of hiring managers? And which attention-getting ploys are sure to fail?

The Ten Grossest Things Flight Attendants Have Seen Passengers Do On An Airplane

x You have successfully emailed the post.

A flight attendant career is glamorous! Or so I thought! I admit, I signed up for the glamour eighteen years ago, but I quickly learned that most of the glamor was gone from this industry. I was on my second trip as a new hire flight attendant, my uniform was crisp, my hair was pulled back in a perfect french twist to match my beautiful french manicure, and I had all the right accessories.

This particular day I was the aisle flight attendant when a passenger asked me if I would heat up a baby bottle. I knew just what to do! Now all I needed was a sick bag so I could fill it with hot water. I reached into a seat back pocket, grabbed a sick bag and pushed my hand inside to open it up. Feeling the still warm, oatmeal consistency on my hand is where the glamor ended for me. Yes folks, I had just stuck my manicured hands into fresh vomit!

You've heard about the gross things people do on airplanes. There's classics like cutting toenails, walking barefoot around the plane, changing a baby diaper on the tray table...I could go on. I hate to admit it, but these are all behaviors I see or experience as a flight attendant every time I go to work.

I recently asked some co-workers to share the grossest things they have seen throughout the years as well. Warning, the answers even shocked me! Fasten your seat belts.
