Citi: Here's The Real Reason 24 People Get Arrested At One Of Our Branches

Citibank Public Affairs issued the following statement regarding today's incident: "A large amount of protesters entered our branch at 555 La Guardia Place around 2:00 PM today. They were very disruptive and refused to leave after being repeatedly asked, causing our staff to call 911. The Police asked the branch staff to close the branch until the protesters could be removed. Only one person asked to close an account and was accommodated."

To be clear: no one was arrested for closing an account; we didn't lock people in our branch - the police decided to close the branch; and we didn't ask for anyone to be arrested -  that is a police decision.

BRUTAL: Cain Struggles To Defend 9-9-9 Plan, Admits Some Poor People Will Pay More Taxes

GOP front-runner Herman Cain struggled to defend his 9-9-9 tax plan on NBC's Meet The Press, admitting for the first time that some people with lower incomes would pay more under the plan.

"Some people will pay more," he told David Gregory. "But most people will pay less... The people who spend more on new goods will spend more."

Cain's plan would establish a 9 percent flat tax and sales tax — drawing criticism from Democrats and Republicans alike.

Cain said you can't consider state taxes when evaluating his plan because "these are replacement taxes."

"There are invisible taxes built into everything we buy. The price of goods goes down [under 9-9-9]," he said.

Cain said his tax plan would pass because its simplicity resonates with the American people — and that even those who see their taxes increase will see benefits under the 9-9-9 plan.

On foreign policy, Cain said he is informed by the writings of former UN ambassador John Bolton and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger — but insisted he was not a neo-conservative. "I'm not familiar with the neo-conservative movement," he admitted.

Cain added that he opposes abortion is all instances — including rape and incest — unless the life of the mother is at risk, in which case "it is up for the family to decide."

There Are More Wireless Subscribers In The U.S. Than People

x You have successfully emailed the post.

CTIA released a new survey yesterday with some interesting data on wireless subscribers in the U.S. The survey covers January 2011 through June 2011.

Right now there are more than 327 million wireless subscriptions in the U.S. That's about 20 million more subscriptions than there are people.

How is that possible?

The survey takes into account all wireless subscriptions, including tablets. Apparently, many people are carrying around more than one connected device.

Some other interesting stats from the survey:

The average local monthly wireless bill is $47.23.1.138 trillion text messages received.278.3 million active data-capable devices running. (That includes tablets, wireless hotspots, etc.)

These Rich People Support Obama's Millionaire Tax

Lisa Du | Oct. 11, 2011, 2:20 PM | 2,252 |   x You have successfully emailed the post.

President Barack Obama's proposed "Buffett Rule" has been nothing short of controversial, and everyone is weighing in on the feasibility of the tax on millionaires and what it means for America. From denouncements of class warfare by Congressional Republication to showers of support from Americans, we've heard about it all.

The proposed legislation, part of President Obama's overall deficit reduction plan, calls for raising the minimum tax rate on those who make over $1 million in income per year.

Among the rich, opinions have also been mixed. We've heard from those that are against the policy, but there are many who have shown willingness to be taxed to help the American economy out of its rut.

From from hedge fund owner John Arnold to Def Jam's Russell Simmons, we rounded up their words of support.

In a wonderful use of the UK's Freedom of Information Act, anonymous Twitter user FOIMonkey asked London's Metropolitan Police what "other" meant in official reports of items confiscated by police officers guarding the houses of Parliament (h/t CNBC.com).

The document released reveals a great insight into British political protest (11 shaving foam cans confiscated in July?).

We made a list of our favorites from the document, though there are many more (including one -- "Mud Larking" -- that remains a mystery).

Simon observed an emerging patterns that exposed cultural desires and demands that drive international and local commerce while regulated by state laws.

TIRED OF THE SPIN? More People* Tuned Into CNN Following Obama's Speech Than Maddow Or Hannity

x You have successfully emailed the post.

piers andersonThis is telling.

Following President Obama's big address on jobs before a joint session of Congress -- during which he encouraged (directed) the GOP to stop politicizing and cooperate -- more viewers in the (much-coveted) demo (25-54) tuned into Piers Morgan's coverage on CNN than did to either Rachel Maddow or Sean Hannity.

That second result is particularly stunning considering the powerhouse ratings Fox News usually enjoys night in and night out.

It's worth noting that significantly more people watched the actual speech on Fox News, but by 9pm had clicked away and apparently over to CNN.  (A fact the GOP may want to take note of since during that hour Hannity was featuring interviews and speech reactions with House majority leader Eric Cantor and GOP Senator Rand Paul.)

Another contributing factor may have been the news that there was evidence of a new terrorist threat tied to the Sept. 11th anniversary and aimed at Washington and New York.  As we've seen time and again this year viewers tend to turn to CNN for breaking news coverage.

Meet The People That Yahoo's Board Has Been Abusing For Years Now

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Yahoo's share price is jumping on the news that Carol Bartz is out and Daniel Loeb, a major shareholder, is calling for board turnover.

But while the stock is up almost three points since August's low of $11.09, its price isn't approaching the 52-week high of $18.84.

And it's no where near the $31 per share that Microsoft offered way back in 2008.

In other words, there are some funds out there (and a few individuals) that have been abused by Yahoo's board for a long time now.

Want to know who these poor people are?

We found the top 17 share owners, how much they own, and what that stake is worth.

(We used Thursday's opening price of $13.57 to calculate the figures.)

Taiwan Considers Paying People To Have Babies

Taiwan announced earlier this summer that it had the world’s lowest fertility rate, raising fears that economic productivity will drop in 10 years and cause the island to fall behind its industrialized Asian neighbors after decades of trying to keep up with them.

Just 0.9 children were born per woman on the island of 23 million people last year, declining steadily since its ideal replacement rate of 2.1 in 1982, the Ministry of the Interior said in a statement.

Taiwan follows urbanized, industrialized peers Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, places where women have become more interested in getting university degrees to pursue high-stress careers that may preclude them having children.

City dwellers also fret about child-care costs in the face of other expenses.

But other Asian governments have made headway in encouraging couples to have more children. Singapore began offering baby bonuses, including cash, in 2001, for example. Japan has pushed for more automation while encouraging elders, women, and foreigners to take jobs.

To catch up, Taiwan is leaning toward subsidies and tax breaks.

“The main difference between Taiwan and other Asian countries is that its birthrate is going down while other countries have been picking up since 2005,” said Yang Wen-shan, sociology institute researcher at Academia Sinica in Taiwan.

10 People Who Might Lead Us To The Goldman Elevator Tweeter (GS)

x You have successfully emailed the post.

A Twitter account purporting to share quotes overheard in the Goldman Sachs elevators has been providing some of the juiciest gossip on Wall Street for weeks.

The account holder claims to work inside Goldman. The Post says Goldman is worried that the tweeter is a rogue employee.

But for all we know, it's a 40-year old gamer from the Midwest. Or a PR experiment intended to distract people from the real issues and/or make Goldman's elevators out to be dens of humor, debauchery and sex.

So we looked up @GSElevator's first ten followers—the people with the earliest tip-off and, perhaps, the best chance of leading to the secret Tweeter. (Thanks to Gawker for the inspiration.) Several on the list are financial journalists, but others—including the very first follower—are more mysterious and... intriguing.

Here's How Normal People Really Feel About Netflix's Price Hike

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Netflix is raising its prices for existing customers today, so make sure you check your account.

The unlimited streaming plus one DVD plan now costs $15.98 a month, up from $9.99. Alternatively, customers can get either unlimited streaming or one DVD for $7.99 a month.

The price increase was announced back in July and went in effect for new customers immediately. Existing subscribers had until the end of August before changing their plan.

Will this price hike drive customers away? Or does Netflix have the market in such a choke-hold that it doesn't matter? Watch below to see what people really think.

China Is About To Slash Income Taxes For 60 Million People

Some 60 million Chinese will wake up newly exempt from income tax tomorrow morning, as the government tries to boost poorer peoples’ spending power and fuel sustainable economic growth.

Though a few top earners will pay more, almost everyone else will get a break, according to Finance Ministry calculations.

“This is good news for most people, especially low- and middle-income employees,” says Yi Xianrong, a finance expert at the China Academy of Social Sciences think tank.

The tax break offers consumers some relief in the face of high inflation, which was running at an annual rate of 6.5 percent last month and eating into family budgets.

The biggest beneficiaries will be those at the bottom of the tax scale. The lowest rung of the income-tax ladder has been raised from 2,000 renminbi ($313) per month to 3,500 RMB ($547). The average Chinese wage is around 3,000 RMB a month.

The tax reform, made more generous after a wave of online protest against earlier government proposals for stingier changes, means that only about 8 percent of Chinese will pay any income tax at all, according to Wang Jianfan, deputy director of the Finance Ministry’s tax policy department.

Like many developing countries, China relies very little on hard-to-collect income tax for its revenue. Last year it raised only 6.6 percent of its taxes from personal income. Instead, the government goes after the business sector, which is easier to monitor.

Raising the income tax threshold will cost the government 160 billion RMB ($25 billion) in lost revenue, according to the Finance Ministry, but this is “no big deal” for Chinese public finances, according to Arthur Kroeber, head of the Beijing-based Dragonomics economic consultancy.

“Fundamentally, China’s fiscal conditions are very strong”, Mr. Kroeber says, pointing to government estimates of a budget deficit below 2 percent this year.

What the government gets for its $25 billion, says Dr. Yi, is goodwill at a time when ordinary people are grumbling increasingly loudly about rocketing food prices. “If people’s purchasing power goes up, that is good for social stability,” Yi says.

Household income has been falling as a share of GDP, relative to corporate and government revenues, for several years, but the new tax breaks are unlikely to reverse that trend because income tax plays such a minor role in China’s economy.

“If the government wants to redistribute income from the corporate to the household sector, tax policy is not going to do the trick,” warns Kroeber.

ACCIDENTS WAITING TO HAPPEN: The Most Dangerous People In Reality Television

x You have successfully emailed the post.

For Bravo and its "Real Housewives" franchise, the tragic death of Russell Armstrong has spelled serious business problems.

And though we don't subscribe to the theory that putting something on camera makes it real, plenty of people have raised questions about how reality TV affects its subjects and its viewers.

You don't have to look far to find stars whose issues with anger, alcohol, or self-esteem are imparting terrible TV lessons at best -- or, at worst, pushing them towards personal collapse, right before our eyes.

10 Lessons We Can Take From People Who Lived Through The Depression

x You have successfully emailed the post.

It isn't difficult to see shades of the Great Depression in the Great Recession, and in today's volatile economy. High unemployment, staggering debt, and stocks that -- well, The New York Post put it best on its August 10th cover.

Still, the hardship of the late 1920s and the 1930s has yet to be replicated on such a grand scale. The 25% unemployment rate was a reality back then. But corners were cut, ends were met, and the generation that lived through it still stands as a testament to getting past tough times.

Some of the men and women of the Great Depression are still around today, and perhaps it's time to turn to them for inspiration.

The 15 Wackiest Things People Have Listed On Their Resumes

Given that 45 percent of human resources managers say they spend less than a minute, on average, on each job application they see, it’s understandable that some people might go overboard in trying to bring some individuality to their work history. But would you list your unique ability to do the moonwalk in the “special skills” section of your resume?

That’s actually not the wackiest resume mistake CareerBuilder uncovered in a survey of 2,600 employers nationwide, who were asked to recall the most unusual resumes they’d ever seen. It seems safe to assume none of these people were hired, but since CareerBuilder didn’t specifically ask, I guess there’s an outside shot that one of these tactics actually worked. (Although probably not the one about being arrested for assaulting a former boss.)

Lessons Learned

Can’t you be even a little imaginative in putting together your resume? No, says CareerBuilder’s vice president of human resources, Rosemary Haefner. “Creativity and personal touches may seem tempting to some job seekers, but many times, it’s a disqualifying distraction.”

Instead, Haefner suggests job seekers stick with the basics:

Stay relevant. Customize your resume to each individual position, highlighting the experience that makes you best-suited to that particular post.Stay readable. If there’s no white space on your resume, reformat it to make it easier on the eyes. A wall of unbroken gray text is off-putting–especially if it’s the fiftieth resume someone’s seen that day.Write a compelling professional summary. Ditch the ‘Objective’ line in favor of a two-sentence description of your relevant experience. This is the ‘hook’ that can convince a recruiter, HR pro, or hiring manager to spend a little more time on your application.Proofread. It’s too easy for hiring managers to disqualify you based on a typo-if you don’t care about making sure your resume is perfect, what does that say about your level of conscientiousness? Proofread it yourself, and before sending it out, ask a few friends to proofread your resume for you.

What are your best tips for getting the attention of hiring managers? And which attention-getting ploys are sure to fail?
