How Global Stock Markets Stacked Up During Last Week's Big Rally

Major indexes posted solid returns this week as markets across the globe rallied. Some, including two in the U.S., saw year-to-date returns cross back into positive territory.

The approval of the EFSF expansion and the improving economic data out of the U.S. proved a major boon.

Look for market focus to shift to earnings over the coming weeks.

This week's sports headlines were dominated by the Boston Red Sox.

More specifically, they were dominated by the boozey, fried-chicken-eating pitchers that an anonymous Beantown source threw under the bus in an explosive Boston Globe article.

But it wasn't all Sox this week.

America's favorite back-up quarterback become a starter, England's most bone-headed soccer star made a bone-headed play, and a New York Yankee landed a new love interest.

NBA Cancels First Two Weeks Of Regular Season

  x You have successfully emailed the post. After two days of negotiations and no agreement on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement in sight, the NBA tonight canceled the first two weeks of the regular season.

The two sides met for seven hours today, but Stern says the two sides are "very far apart on virtually all issues."

The biggest issue continues to be how the two sides will split $3.8 billion in revenue. That is a number that is certain to skyrocket when the NBA negotiates their next round of televisions deals.

The season was scheduled to begin on November 15 and at this point, it would still be a surprise to see any games before Christmas.

The good news is, so far there are more winners than not. 

That actually goes for media in general....plenty of people had a good week, and nobody had a really terrible one.  Unless you are a celebrity who likes to store naked pictures on themselves on their cell phone. 

And then there's Anderson Cooper's new show.  Oh my.

Here Are The Most Powerful Covers From The Weeks Following 9/11

Morning papers were still must-reads.

Magazines still mattered.

Jpegs of cover images were not available in advance to be passed around on Twitter.  And how the newsweeklies framed current events often dictated the national mindset on that event.

Shorter version: It was a different world...in many, many ways.  But perhaps none so measurable as the media world.

To wit.  We've collected some of the most powerful magazine and newspaper covers from the weeks following the September 11 attacks.

What is perhaps the most striking about some of these images is how graphic they are.  In the years since 9/11 the media -- not generally known for its self restraint -- has shied away from graphic images of that day.

As a result some of these covers, with their direct images from that day, feel as if they are the visual equivalent of a profanity.

Suffice to say, they remain incredibly jarring.

Steve Jobs Was Housebound In Recent Weeks (AAPL)

News about Steve Jobs is still coming in after the bombshell that he's stepping down as CEO.

Bloomberg is now reporting that Jobs was housebound for the last few weeks, but worked a full day today before his resignation was announced.

The story emphasized that he didn't resign because his condition is suddenly getting worse.

Here's the relevant bit:

The day of the announcement, Jobs was in Apple’s Cupertino, California office for the entire work day, and he attended a regularly scheduled board meeting, according to a person close to Jobs, who was not authorized to speak about the executive’s health. While Jobs has been housebound for the last few weeks and his condition is weak, the resignation was not indicative of a sudden worsening, this person said.
