Here Are This Week's Winners And Losers In Sports

Angela RypienImage: Lingerie Football League

This week's sports headlines were dominated by the Boston Red Sox.

More specifically, they were dominated by the boozey, fried-chicken-eating pitchers that an anonymous Beantown source threw under the bus in an explosive Boston Globe article.

But it wasn't all Sox this week.

America's favorite back-up quarterback become a starter, England's most bone-headed soccer star made a bone-headed play, and a New York Yankee landed a new love interest.

EA Sports Pissed Off The Nicest Guy In NBA History

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Bill RussellImage: Wikimedia Commons

NBA legend Bill Russell is known for his big smile and trademark laugh. But he's is doing neither since EA Sports used his likeness without permission or compensation.

And now Russell is suing the video game maker as well as the NCAA.

Russell will merge his lawsuit with former UCLA star Ed O'Bannon's.

O'Bannon's lawsuit was filed on behalf of other former NCAA players and alleges that the NCAA and EA Sports "unlawfully foreclosed former Division I men’s basketball and football players from receiving any compensation related to the commercial use of their images and likenesses."

The lawsuit may face an uphill battle as similar suits have been dismissed recently. In one case, the judge ruled that EA Sports' first amendment right of free expression outweighed former Rutgers quarterback Ryan Hart's control over his likeness.

SPORTS CHART OF THE DAY: The Phillies Have The Most Playoff Wins Of Any MLB Team

x You have successfully emailed the post.

The New York Yankees have 27 World Championships, but the Philadelphia Phillies are currently the most successful franchise in Major League Baseball.

The New York Yankees have been to the playoffs in 16 of the last 17 years. But that stretch includes just one World Series title in the last 11 years. And in the last seven years (2005-2011), the Yankees have only made it past the first round of the playoffs two times.

On the other hand, just in the last five seasons, the Phillies have been to two World Series and three League Championship Series. In total, the Phillies have won 27 games in the last five years. That dwarfs the Yankees, who are second with 19.

In total, 19 of 30 teams have made the playoffs in the last five years. Here are the ten teams with the most wins during that span...

Sports Moments That Would Have Exploded The Internet If They Happened Today

x You have successfully emailed the post.

How did people respond to crazy world events before the Internet and social media took over the world?

Whenever something totally unexpected happens, our first instinct is to hop on Twitter and share the experience with millions of other users.

Sports moments are no different.

In fact, the end of this summer's USA-Japan Women's World Cup game set the record for the most tweets per minute ever.

Sports teams often go through sharp swings in popularity. Attendance rises and falls. This frequently has to do with how well a team performs. When teams do well, people outside of their primary fan base become interested and start going to games. An example of this is the Florida Marlins, who won the world series in 2003 and saw attendance rise 60% in a single year. Alternatively, teams who do poorly also win new fans.

Attendance for the four major league sports – NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL – remained relatively flat from 2001 to 2010. The total fan increase for all NHL teams — the best performer of the four — was only 2.59%. The weakest, the NFL, only grew .49%.

Despite the relatively anemic growth overall, some teams have done extraordinarily well drawing fans. MLB teams such as Los Angeles and Minnesota saw crowds increase more than 50%, while Philadelphia’s attendance doubled. NFL teams such as Arizona, Atlanta, and Dallas jumped more than 25%.

Using records provided by ESPN, 24/7 Wall St. examined changes in attendance for the four major league sports from 2001 to 2010 to identify the twelve teams that decreased more than 20%. The majority of these teams have performed poorly in recent years, causing fans to lose interest. The win-lose record and number of championships is included to reflect the former and current state of each team.

Check Out These Cross-Dressing NFL Players In The Most Ridiculous Sports Card Series We've Ever Seen

Coca-Cola Monsters of the GridironI reflexively grow suspicious whenever an athlete uses himself for any promotional purpose, and the more out-of-character the appearance is, the more suspicious I get. Whenever I hear of a player "having some fun on the set," or hear a guy say through his agent that he "had a really great time" at a photo shoot, my level of suspicion immediately ramps up to critical levels.

Click here to see the cards >

These guys are like most people, in that they aren't socially energetic extroverts. They're the Straight Man in every commercial. They stand there like a prop as Rabid Fan hatches a Crazy Plot with Other Rabid Fan. They're passable on billboards with milk mustaches only because they aren't moving.

When you read a promotional puff piece of the promotion (An advertisement of an advertisement! We are all insane!) and see a photo of Dan Marino smiling and sort of half-hugging the commercial director's production assistant, he is not, as the caption will claim, "clowning around on the set."He is a dog in a crate, hungry, thirsty, terrified, desperate to get off the plane. I feel awful. What are you doing to this man? Why would I make myself a participant in this agony by purchasing your product? What are you selling again? God, man, who cares?

I think I'm really exaggerating here, just because that's the way I would be in such a situation. I'm sure that every day, athletes take photo shoots, commercials, what have you, in stride. They do what they need to do, and it isn't a big deal.

In this case -- the case of this Monsters of the Gridiron football card set -- I know I'm not exaggerating. Look in their eyes! They wish they were dead.

These really may be the dumbest cards in the history of Sports Cards For Insane People. Deep breath. (And once again, I have delved into the unbelievably throrough depths of Check Out My Cards to find these monstrosities.)

SPORTS CHART OF THE DAY: Ryan Fitzpatrick Was The NFL's Best QB In Week One

x You have successfully emailed the post.

The first week of the NFL is now in the books. And one of the big story lines were the big quarterback performances produced despite the lockout-shortened off-season.

The biggest surprise may have been Cam Newton's historic debut which produced 422 passing yards in a losing effort. But how did that rank among the other big passing efforts?

The first week of the NFL also gives us our first look at ESPN's attempt to reinvent the antiquated quarterback rating formula with their own stat, Quarterback Rating (QBR).

While Newton's performance was great, it was far from the best game of the weekend. That belongs to Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Buffalo Bills, who was 17-25 with 208 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions in a 41-7 win over the Chiefs.

Was that better than Newton's 422 yards? Or Aaron Rodgers, who threw for 312 yards and 3 TDs? Or Drew Brees who tossed 3 TDs along with 419 yards and no interceptions? We'll let you be the judge.

As for the worst performance of the weekend, QBR says it was Kerry Collins. He was just 16-31 and 197 yards in the Colts 34-7 opening week loss. Yet somehow, that was worse than Donovan McNabb who was 7-15 for 39 yards, one TD and one INT.

Here is a look at the ten best and ten worst performances from week one according to QBR.

SPORTS CHART OF THE DAY: The Average NFL Franchise Is Worth More Than $1 Billion

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Forbes.com has released their annual NFL franchise valuations. And for the first time, the average NFL franchise tops $1.0 billion in value.

The Dallas Cowboys top the list at $1.85 billion, followed by the Washington Redskins at $1.56 billion. In all, 15 of the NFL's 32 teams are valued at more than $1.0 billion.

For comparison, in the other three major North American sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NHL) combined, the New York Yankees ($1.7 billion) are the only team valued at more than $1.0 billion.

Also consider that the NFL's least valuable franchise, the Jacksonville Jaguars ($725 million) are still worth more than every NBA and NHL franchise, and all but five MLB teams.

The average value of NFL franchise is nearly twice the average value of an MLB franchise (below). And the total value of all 32 football teams ($33.1 billion) is nearly as much as the total value of the 90 teams in the NBA, NHL, and MLB ($33.6 billion).

Here are the average franchise values in each sport (data via Forbes.com)...

SMUWhen the sordid details of Nevin Shapiro’s relationships with past and present members of the University of Miami’s football team came out, an obvious question arose.

How will the NCAA respond?

With terms like “death penalty” being thrown around, history can give us some idea of what the NCAA might do.
