The Grand Opening Of Uniqlo's Amazing Flagship Store In New York City

uniqlo grand openingImage: Karlee Weinmann, Business Insider

Thousands of shoppers trekked to Fifth Avenue on Friday to be among the first to see Uniqlo's largest global flagship store revealed (at 89,000 square feet, it's the biggest single retail space on avenue).

When Mayor Bloomberg cut the ribbon at noon, he said the store would add more than a thousand new jobs; and Uniqlo CEO and Japan's richest man Tadashi Yanai -- whose father started the company as a tiny menswear shop in Japan more than 50 years ago -- said the opening was the realization of his "American Dream."

Retail workers trained for up to three months just for the store's opening day. We captured the moment while alongside members of the media from around the world (including many from Japan and at least one from France), and even braved the chaos once the doors were opened.

It's Kind Of Amazing How Suddenly Everything's Changed In The Economy

x You have successfully emailed the post. And suddenly, after a rally, and a few cooperative headlines, everything is suddenly bright and happy!

BTIG's Dan Greenhaus expands on this:

Over the course of the last two months, we have talked about how markets would be able to rally in the face of amazing amounts of uncertainty, if only headlines would cooperate. On the economic side of things, the data has cooperated to a larger degree than even we expected. Whereas we spent much of August positing that the U.S. was not in or entering a recession, much to the consternation of many clients, it now appears quite clear that the U.S. was not only not in recession in Q3 but that GDP might grow as much as 2.5%, a relatively healthy pace of expansion (the first estimate for Q3 GDP will be released on October 27).

The European headlines have been far less cooperative but over the weekend, the news that Dexia would sell 100% of Dexia Banque Belgium to the Belgium government for €4 billion while also securing some €90 billion in guarantees was greeted enthusiastically by U.S. investors. Also of importance was the announcement that Huijin, the largest shareholder in ICBC, CCB and other Chinese lenders, would be adding to its stake by a not inconsiderable amount. Besides representing a vote of confidence in the bank shares (or at least the perception of confidence), it should not and did not go unnoticed that Huijin took stakes in these lenders in September 2008 and October 2009, not terrible times for investors to have “gone long.”

PHOTOS: Check Out Amazing Pictures From London's Notting Hill Carnival

x You have successfully emailed the post.

With London still tense after riots earlier this month, police were taking no chances with this weekend's Notting Hill Carnival, flooding the zone with 6,500 police officers.

The carnival began in 1964 as a way to celebrate the culture of London's Afro-Caribbean communities. By the 1990s, it had become the biggest street party in Europe, regularly attracting over a million revelers from all over the globe.

In later years, the carnival became synonymous with gang violence, and despite police efforts, this year was no different, with one man stabbed.

Despite the violence, arrests were relatively low this year, and most people simply gathered to enjoy the incredible costumes, reggae soundsystems, and amazing jerk chicken.

It Is Amazing How Many Ways Steve Jobs Changed Media

x You have successfully emailed the post.

During Steve Jobs' run as head of Apple, the creations of his company impacted a huge number of industries.

Perhaps the most affected, however, was the media world.

From the rise of the personal computer through the iPad, Apple's white devices popped up everywhere and changed the face of the media landscape.

More often than not, they led the way and others were forced to follow.
