PHOTOS: Urban Life And History Mix In New York City's Apartments

Houzz | Oct. 16, 2011, 3:00 PM | 2,257 |

When looking at the residential architecture of New York, it's necessary to split it into two groups: urban homes and suburban/country homes.

Here we look at the first, which encompasses apartments, lofts, and townhouses. Most of the examples that follow are lofts, because they are such a unique part of New York City's transformation from an industrial to a post-industrial city.

New York is host to a good deal of stunning new architecture, but it also has a strong tradition of preservation that embraces conversions of old buildings into new uses. Dealing with that history inside is one aspect of the interiors in this ideabook.

PHOTOS: Tour The California Home That Was Inspired By A Treehouse

Houzz | Oct. 15, 2011, 2:45 PM | 2,188 |

Designer Jason Urrutia was finishing a project in Marin County, Calif., when a realtor friend told him she had something he'd like in a neighboring town.

He wasn't looking for something new yet, but he went along in the spirit of curiosity. "The minute I walked in I saw all the potential," he says. "You knew, right away, yes."

The house, designed in 1979 by the late celebrated architect Charles Moore, is situated on a piece of land that features a lush mix of Northern California's characteristic live oak trees and other natural growth. Urrutia purchased the home and, in collaboration with his girlfriend, designer Martha Carvalho, transformed it into a luxurious home.

Here's What The Hacker Who Leaked Naked Photos Of Mila Kunis And Scarlett Johansson Looks Like

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Suspected celebrity hacker Chris Chaney told a Jacksonville local news affiliate last night that he's "glad" the FBI caught him.

Chaney went on to say he was unable to stop hacking into starlets' computers -- stand by, we're sure a psychology talking head will coin a phrase for this shortly.

In the meantime, here's a photo of the man that stole and leaked the photos clicked 'round the world.

Big, Beautiful Photos Of Facebook's iPad App (AAPL)

x You have successfully emailed the post. facebook for ipad friendsImage: Screenshot

After months in App Store Purgatory, the Facebook app for iPad is finally here.

We have it. We tried it.

It's a lot like the leaked version we tested a few months ago, but with a few minor tweaks. Most notably: app search. We see a lot of potential here for developers to get their iPad/iPhone apps downloaded thanks to Facebook recommendations.

Enough talking though. Check out our full tour of the app below.

You can also download it right here.

PHOTOS: President Obama's No Good, Very Bad Week

x You have successfully emailed the post.

obama bummed.jpgAfter a summer of bad news and political gridlock, September isn't shaping up to be much better for the Obama administration.

The president's much anticipated jobs plan got a tepid response this week, even as Obama embarked on a campaign-style road trip to sell the plan to voters. Even members of his own party were lukewarm.

If that wasn't bad enough, Obama's poll numbers dropped to record lows and special election losses sent Democrats into a panic over their prospects for 2012.

And that was all by Tuesday. Here's a look at the President's grim week.

WHOA: Did This Accessory Maker Just Leak The iPhone 5 Design? [PHOTOS] (AAPL)

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Case Mate, a company that makes accessories and cases for smartphones, just posted a bunch of product pages for iPhone 5 cases.

And they hint at a major, iPad 2-like redesign. BGR was the first to discover the new cases.

However, it seems like these cases are purely concept. Case Mate's iPhone 5 page cites a bunch of rumors and reports, so it seems like the company went ahead and based its designs on speculation as opposed to official blueprints from Apple.

We've spoken to iPhone accessory makers in the past who told us it's very rare for Apple to give this kind of early access to a new device's design.

And posting a bunch of renders before the phone launches? That would never happen unless there was some sort of major mix up.

Check out the photos below and judge for yourself.

PHOTOS: The Siege Of Leningrad, Seventy Years Later

x You have successfully emailed the post.

The Siege of Leningrad began seventy years ago this month.

While relatively little known in the West, the event remains one of the lingering memories of the war for Russia -- click here to see the photos >

Hitler had special plans for Leningrad, now known as St. Petersberg, a city that was once the Russian capital and the birthplace of Russian communism. He even had plans for a party at the Hotel Astoria and wanted to rename the city "Adolfsburg" -- although he was also considering burning it to the ground.

Caught between German and Finnish troops, the Soviet army in Leningrad was besieged. Over a million citizens in the city were mobilized in June 1941 to help build fortifications. On September 7th all land connections to the city were severed by the Axis front.

Artillery bombing of the city began in September 1941 and continued for 872 days.

The destruction wrought on the city has been called the largest loss of life in any modern city. Books were burnt for heat and zoo animals were eaten for meet -- some even resorted to cannibalism. It is thought that 750,000 civilians and the same amount of soldiers died during the siege.

Before the siege the city contained around 3 million people. It did not reach those levels of population again until the 1960s.

We ran into an amazing view of Lower Manhattan from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade this evening - so we snapped a few photos with our BlackBerry (which doesn't do it justice). But the images still capture the mood. 9/11/11Image: Business Insider

Carlson Tucker isn't the only one wearing a bow tie these days.

The men's accessory has been slowly creeping back into popular use, and it made a strong showing at last night's Fashion's Night Out.

As the hippest and trendiest put on their finest to parade in the streets at night many interesting bow ties (and bow tie wearers) could be seen.

Here are a few we saw around SoHo.

PHOTOS: A Drinking Contest To Determine The Best Bartender In New York City

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Appleton Estate Challenge From left to right: Edwin Medina, Natalie Jacobs, Ivy Mix, and Garrett Richard all competed to be named the best bartender in New York City.

The search for the perfect cocktail can be challenging in New York, which has thousands of watering holes across the five boroughs.

But one company is giving it a whirl.

Appleton Estate Reserve hosted its second Remixology Bartender Challenge to weed out the best bartender in New York City Tuesday night at Lani Kai on Broome Street in Soho.

The winner moves on to compete against Miami, San Francisco and Boston winners Sept. 19.

Natalie Jacobs, Edwin Medina, Ivy Mix, and Garrett Richard all had to create two cocktails for the judges -- one based off their favorite song and the second inspired by their favorite New York movie.

We were on hand to take in the evening's costumes and competition. Bizarrely, the contestants only served up their signature cocktails to the judges, so we had to take their word for the finest concoction of the night.

PHOTOS: Check Out Amazing Pictures From London's Notting Hill Carnival

x You have successfully emailed the post.

With London still tense after riots earlier this month, police were taking no chances with this weekend's Notting Hill Carnival, flooding the zone with 6,500 police officers.

The carnival began in 1964 as a way to celebrate the culture of London's Afro-Caribbean communities. By the 1990s, it had become the biggest street party in Europe, regularly attracting over a million revelers from all over the globe.

In later years, the carnival became synonymous with gang violence, and despite police efforts, this year was no different, with one man stabbed.

Despite the violence, arrests were relatively low this year, and most people simply gathered to enjoy the incredible costumes, reggae soundsystems, and amazing jerk chicken.

PHOTOS: Incredible Pictures Of Iceland's Beautiful Harpa Concert Hall

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Iceland's dazzling Harpa Concert Hall opened in May of this year, barely three years after the country was decimated by in one of Europe's most devastating banking failures.

However, the economic crisis didn't deter Olafur Eliasson, an artist who worked on the buildings facade, with the 52-year-old Henning Larsen Architects practice to create a building that truly ranks as a work of art.

Elaisson is best known for "The Weather Project" in London's Tate Modern Gallery, another piece of art that used light and reflection to make something otherworldly.

Rowan Moore of The Guardian writes, "It is indeed crystalline and, according to the official explanations, inspired by Iceland's volcanic geology. It glitters. It is a bit disco. It has something of Brezhnev-era Soviet architecture, but with bling."

The building looks set to become Iceland's premier music venue, and also houses four main conference halls and has several meeting rooms, the largest of which accommodates over 1,800 guests, and restaurants and bars.

Rebels Found An Entire Album Of Condoleeza Rice Photos In Qaddafi's Palace

x You have successfully emailed the post.

The rebels first look into Muammar Qaddafi's palatial compound has pulled back the curtain on the private life of the Libyan dictator, and the findings are more even more bizarre than imagined.

Today, the ransacking turned up a photo album with pictures of former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice on every page. The book even includes a picture of Qaddafi with Rice during her 2008 visit to Tripoli, back when the U.S. and Libya were friends.

If the photo collection is any indication, Qaddafi apparently developed a little crush on the U.S. senior diplomat.

"I support my darling black African woman," he said in a 2007 interview with Al-Jazeera. "Leeza, Leeza, Leeza...I love her very much."
