Dear Upper East Siders, Here's What The Protesters Are Chanting Outside Your House

The non-violent Occupy Wall Street protests taking place in Manhattan's Financial District are currently marching through the Upper East Side.

They're calling it the "NYC Billionaires Walking Tour."

The protesters are expected to visit the homes of hedge fund billionaire John Paulson, media mogul Rupert Murdoch and JPMorgan's chief executive Jamie Dimon.

Now what was once a small group of college age kids camping out in Zuccotti Park has swelled to a massive movement with copycat versions popping up in cities nationwide. 

As a result, the marches are no longer just a couple hundred, but thousands with their chants and cheers resounding and they're all over the Upper East Side today.

Speaking of their chants and cheers, they're extremely catchy.

The formal dining room features a bay window, and the living room has a wood-burning fireplace.

The property listing describes it as straight out of the Hamptons

SHUTDOWN SHOWDOWN: House Passes Funding Bill Deemed 'Dead On Arrival' In Senate

An already contentious debate over funding the government after September 30 intensified Thursday as Republicans amended their bill to be more amenable to GOP lawmakers and Democrats pledged to oppose it.

Without action by the start of the new fiscal year, the government will shut down on October 1.

House Republicans passed a continuing resolution early Friday morning on a mostly partly-line vote, though the bill drew immediate criticism from Senate Democrats over its spending cut offsets for new federal disaster aid.

“The bill the House will vote on tonight is not an honest effort at compromise," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said, noting that the bill is dead on arrival in the Senate. "It fails to provide the relief that our fellow Americans need as they struggle to rebuild their lives in the wake of floods, wildfires and hurricanes, and it will be rejected by the Senate."

The House added $100 million in cuts to the federal program that made the loan to the now-bankrupt solar company, Solyndra, in order to win over enough GOP votes to pass over Democratic opposition. An earlier version fo the bill failed to pass on Wednesday, dealing a blow to tha Republican leadership.

The measure includes $3.65 billion for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, less than the $6.9 requested by the Obama administration and demanded by Democrats.

Michael Steel, a spokesman for Speaker of the House John Boehner, called on the Senate to pass the bill in its current form, noting FEMA could run out of disaster relief money as soon as Monday.

“The Senate should pass this bill immediately, and the President should sign it, because any political games will delay FEMA money that suffering American families desperately need.”

Reid said that the Senate was willing to postpone its vacation to reach a compromise — a prospect House Majority Leader Eric Cantor ruled out early Friday morning — setting the stage for a high-stakes game of political chicken with a week until the deadline.

White House Screws Up Jobs Plan Message

Hours after top adviser David Axelrod asserted that President Barack Obama wants his jobs bill to pass Congress without amendment, White House economic adviser Gene Sperling said the opposite — that Obama would not veto a plan that only contained parts of his proposal.

On Good Morning America Tuesday, Axelrod said "we’re not in a negotiation to break up the package, and it’s not an à la carte menu. It is a strategy to get this country moving."

But Sperling told reporters today that if Obama is “presented with parts of his plan, his instinct would be not to reject things he favored but to come back and keep fighting and fighting to get the entire program,"according to POLITICO.

House Republicans have said they do not approve of Obama's plan in its current form, and intend to make significant modifications to the bill. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor categorically ruled out any tax increases to pay for the bill on Thursday, eliminating any chance the bill can pass in its current form.

The confusion is the latest miscue for Obama since the White House struggled with Republicans over the date of his speech to Congress to outline the plan. 

Obama will travel to Ohio today to try to build public support for his bill.

MAJOR GOP UPSET: Republican Wins Weiner's House Seat In NY Special Election

Democrats took a serious beating Tuesday night as Republicans scored two special election victories, including a major upset win in the race to replace New York Congressman Anthony Weiner.

The first Democratic loss, in Nevada's 2nd congressional district, was unsurprising, with one Republican replacing another in a deep-red district. Republican state senator Mark Amodei sailed past State Treasurer Kate Marshall, 57% to 32%.

But the GOP was not supposed to win the New York's 9th District special election — the race wasn't even supposed to be close. But Republican Bob Turner edged out Democratic Assemblyman David Weprin, 53% to 47% with 70% of precincts reporting.

For all of the headlines and bad puns Weiner garnered, the race to fill his empty seat representing New York's 9th District has been a remarkably low-key affair. But Turner has been quietly siphoning support from Democrats and independents over the past six weeks, largely by capitalizing on voters' dissatisfaction with President Barack Obama. In particular, he has benefited from defections by Orthodox Jewish voters unhappy with Obama's positions on Israel.

As Turner climbed in the polls, the national Republican party activated behind the scenes, funneling money and organizers into the district in the hopes of capturing what has long been a liberal stronghold. Panicked, Democrats also poured cash into the race over the past few days, but their efforts were too little too late.

Republicans are wasting no time casting the New York victory as a national referendum on the President's policies. Meanwhile Democrats are trying to downplay any broader implications by blaming the win on Weprin's badly mismanaged campaign.

In reality, voter dissatisfaction and a weak Democratic candidate were likely both factors in the GOP upset. But that won't stop tonight's results from pushing Democrats deeper into the doldrums, prompting some deep soul-searching as the party heads into the 2012 election cycle.

Seeking To Avoid Federal Shutdown, House GOP Introduces Funding Bill

House Republicans introduced a bill late Wednesday to fund the government through the middle of November — saying they want to remove the threat of a government shutdown.

The temporary resolution is necessary because Congress has yet to act on most budget bills — with the House leaving six of 12 unfinished, and the Senate acting on just one. It sets spending for fiscal year 2012 at $1.043 trillion — the maximum amount allowed under the August debt ceiling bill.

If a new funding bill is not passed by October 1, the beginning of the 2012 fiscal year, then much of the federal government would be without the funds to stay open. The GOP proposal would reduce spending by just over 1.4 percent over the current year.

The measure includes $3.65 billion in disaster relief — $1 billion for immediate needs to pay for hurricane, flood, and tornado relief from the current fiscal year after, and the rest for 2012.

The House is hoping to vote on the bill by the end of the week.

Speaker of the House John Boehner said in a statement that the continuing resolution would decrease uncertainty for businesses – and thereby create jobs.

"The first priority for both parties in today’s economy must be removing government barriers to private-sector job growth. By preventing a government shutdown and once again cutting spending below last year’s levels, this bill gives Congress more time to complete work on legislation that stops the Washington spending binge and provides more certainty for job creators. It also ensures those Americans impacted by natural disasters get the assistance they need in a way that’s best for families and taxpayers. This is a straightforward bill that keeps our focus on creating jobs and cutting spending, and eliminates the uncertainty caused by the specter of a government shutdown. It deserves swift passage in both the House and Senate."

Neither Senate Democrats nor the White House had immediate comment on the proposal Wednesday night.

This  27,000-square-foot palace sits on two acres and reportedly cost $40 million to build (via Curbed). 

The lake-front property was previously listed at $32 million, but was on the market for two years and the owners chopped the price to $23 million. With no prospective buyers in sight, the house is now up for auction.

The decadent estate has six bedrooms, five full bathrooms and three half baths.

Concierge Auctions is putting the house on the auction block Oct. 29.

Montana Couple builds “Hobbit House”

If there is an award for biggest fan of Lord of the Rings, I believe that husband and wife Steve and Christine Michaels would take the prize.

The couple have built a house in the hills of Montana that would fit in to the Shire. I would imagine that if you entered in the address for Bilbo Baggins on Google Maps for Middle Earth, you would be led here.

Granted, it does not have the circular door that J.R.R. Tolkien emphasized in both The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and it is designed for the world of the “big folk”.

You can see a series of photos from my Source that reveal that the house is bigger than it looks. There is no way that Gandalf will be hitting his head on the crossbeams here. There is one door that is so small that it is downright impractical.

Still, this entire place looks very cozy, even though the dwellers have to mow the roof every once in while. Perhaps Peter Jackson should have filmed The Hobbit movie here, assuming that hasn’t already. The whole house cost a price of $410,000, which I’m sure would have been a fraction of a Middle Earth movie budget.
