Sports teams often go through sharp swings in popularity. Attendance rises and falls. This frequently has to do with how well a team performs. When teams do well, people outside of their primary fan base become interested and start going to games. An example of this is the Florida Marlins, who won the world series in 2003 and saw attendance rise 60% in a single year. Alternatively, teams who do poorly also win new fans.

Attendance for the four major league sports – NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL – remained relatively flat from 2001 to 2010. The total fan increase for all NHL teams — the best performer of the four — was only 2.59%. The weakest, the NFL, only grew .49%.

Despite the relatively anemic growth overall, some teams have done extraordinarily well drawing fans. MLB teams such as Los Angeles and Minnesota saw crowds increase more than 50%, while Philadelphia’s attendance doubled. NFL teams such as Arizona, Atlanta, and Dallas jumped more than 25%.

Using records provided by ESPN, 24/7 Wall St. examined changes in attendance for the four major league sports from 2001 to 2010 to identify the twelve teams that decreased more than 20%. The majority of these teams have performed poorly in recent years, causing fans to lose interest. The win-lose record and number of championships is included to reflect the former and current state of each team.

MAJOR GOP UPSET: Republican Wins Weiner's House Seat In NY Special Election

Democrats took a serious beating Tuesday night as Republicans scored two special election victories, including a major upset win in the race to replace New York Congressman Anthony Weiner.

The first Democratic loss, in Nevada's 2nd congressional district, was unsurprising, with one Republican replacing another in a deep-red district. Republican state senator Mark Amodei sailed past State Treasurer Kate Marshall, 57% to 32%.

But the GOP was not supposed to win the New York's 9th District special election — the race wasn't even supposed to be close. But Republican Bob Turner edged out Democratic Assemblyman David Weprin, 53% to 47% with 70% of precincts reporting.

For all of the headlines and bad puns Weiner garnered, the race to fill his empty seat representing New York's 9th District has been a remarkably low-key affair. But Turner has been quietly siphoning support from Democrats and independents over the past six weeks, largely by capitalizing on voters' dissatisfaction with President Barack Obama. In particular, he has benefited from defections by Orthodox Jewish voters unhappy with Obama's positions on Israel.

As Turner climbed in the polls, the national Republican party activated behind the scenes, funneling money and organizers into the district in the hopes of capturing what has long been a liberal stronghold. Panicked, Democrats also poured cash into the race over the past few days, but their efforts were too little too late.

Republicans are wasting no time casting the New York victory as a national referendum on the President's policies. Meanwhile Democrats are trying to downplay any broader implications by blaming the win on Weprin's badly mismanaged campaign.

In reality, voter dissatisfaction and a weak Democratic candidate were likely both factors in the GOP upset. But that won't stop tonight's results from pushing Democrats deeper into the doldrums, prompting some deep soul-searching as the party heads into the 2012 election cycle.

Early Morning Selloff Gets Worse: Major Bank Stocks Getting Routed

We mentioned this morning, that European markets were moving to the downside in early going.

Things have accelerated a bit since then.

Italy is now down about 2%.

Germany is down about 1.5%.

And US futures, which had been higher -- as investors held out (it seemed) some hope that the Obama jobs bill could get turned into reality -- have now gone negative.

The big losers are French banks. SocGen is off 7.3%. Natixis is off 4.33%.

As for the story: There's a ton of moving parts moving in Europe right now. The FT reports on ongoing strains in the bank funding market. There's a big G7 Weekend coming up, as well as the imminent Greek endgame. Finally, Lagarde is out with (yet) another speech calling on recapitaliszations of European banks.

Stadium concessions are a huge part of the business of sports as franchises clean up on the high profit margins and lack of competition.

$7.50 for one hot dog? What choice do you have? (Pretty tasty, though.)

For those kinds of prices, fans would expect the highest quality from their food preparers, but things are not always what they seem. It's a tall order to feed 52,000 people in a single night and keep the the kitchen spic and span. Most MLB ballparks can't (totally) pull it off.

So we looked up the public food inspection records for every Major League Baseball stadium to see who's the best — and worst — at keeping your food clean.

The Major Global Corporations That Aided Libya's Secret Police

When George Bush lifted trade restrictions against Libya in 2004, Colonel Qaddafi's regime went on a "surveillance-gear shopping spree."

Evidence of this global buying were present on the bottom floor of a six-story Tripoli building Monday as reporters from The Wall Street Journal were taken to the dictators Internet monitoring station.

The French tech firm Bull SA, and their subsidiary Amesys installed many of the systems Qaddafi's regime used to closely watch Libyans online activity.

Even Boeing held talks with the dictator earlier this year to install state-of-the-art Internet monitoring products, but the civil war put an end to any further contracts. Qaddafi put a strong focus on Internet activity despite that of the 6.6 million people in Libya only 100,000 residents had Internet subscriptions.

The Journal reports on the Amesys system installed in 2009:

The Eagle system allows agents to observe network traffic and peer into people's emails, among other things. In the room, one English-language poster says: "Whereas many Internet interception systems carry out basic filtering on IP address and extract only those communications from the global flow (Lawful Interception), EAGLE Interception system analyses and stores all the communications from the monitored link (Massive interception)."

On its website, Amesys says its "strategic nationwide interception" system can detect email from Hotmail, Yahoo and Gmail and see chat conversations on MSN instant messaging and AIM. It says investigators can "request the entire database" of Internet traffic "in real time" by entering keywords, email addresses or the names of file attachments as search queries.

As the Arab Spring blew up around him Qaddafi struggled to place further controls on communications, but it was too late.

MOSSBERG: "Extremely Well Informed Sources" Say Steve Jobs Will Still Work On Major Products And Strategy (AAPL)

Though Steve Jobs is stepping down as CEO of Apple, he will remain a key figure in the company, writes All Things D cofounder Walt Mossberg:

To be very clear, Mr. Jobs, while seriously ill, is very much alive. Extremely well-informed sources at Apple say he intends to remain involved in developing major future products and strategy and intends to be an active chairman of the board, even while new CEO Tim Cook runs the company day to day. So, this is not an obituary. But his health is reported to be up and down, and even an active chairman isn’t the same as a CEO.

What might be the next revolutionary product from Apple? Mossberg suggests it will be an Apple TV:

Now, rumors are rife that Apple is working on re-inventing another common device: the TV. The secretive company won’t say a word about that, but nobody should be surprised if it happens, just based on Mr. Jobs’ track record.

Mossberg isn't going to just toss out some random rumor at the end of a big post on Jobs. This is probably the next big thing Apple has cooking up. So, if you're worried about the company's future, this should provide some solace.
