Qaddafi's Heat Seeking Missiles And Other Notorious Missing Weapons From History

Massive amounts of surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) have vanished from Libyan weapon stockpiles and flooded local markets to such a degree that prices for the illegal arms are actually dropping.

According to The New York Times, at least one weapons cache at a schoolbook warehouse had been ransacked, with numerous SA-7 and newer SA-24 missiles missing. 

While international forces find the threat from these weapons credible, France has dispatched additional security to numerous civilian airports, it's impossible to secure all the weapons before falling into dealers hands.

There is some good news, however, the chemical weapons and poison gas belonging to Qaddafi appear to be safe.

This isn't the first time numerous or especially potent weapons have disappeared or gone unaccounted for.

From small-arms to nuclear bombs, nearly every kind of weapon you can think of has been lost by one nation or another.

Qaddafi's Daughter Aisha Gives Birth To A Baby Girl In Algeria

UPDATE: AFP reports that Colonel Gaddafi's daughter Aisha gave birth to baby girl in Algeria

PREVIOUSLY: Muammar Qaddafi's family has fled Libya to neighboring Algeria, according to the AP.

The Algerian government said Qaddafi's wife, two of his sons and their children entered the country on Monday. It did not say whether Qaddafi was with the family.

Also now rebels are claiming to have killed Khamis Qaddafi during clashes in Southern Libya, according to Reuters.

Over the weekend rebels claimed to have seen a caravan of armored Mercedes leaving the country, which was rumored to have contained Libyan VIPs,

Fighting continues today between Libyan rebels and loyalists in Sirte, Qaddafi's home town. If The Colonel himself has fled, then it could end soon.

Algeria has been ruled for 12 years by Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who weathered mass protests early in the year.

Looters In Tripoli Uncover Muammar Qaddafi's Creepy Crush On Condoleezza Rice

This week we watched live as rebels in Libya took over Muammar Qaddafi's compound in Tripoli -- and now we're getting a closer look at what they found (and took) from the dictator and his family's homes.

Some of the findings were no surprise:

Recognizable military garb, Qaddafi's passport, a gold mermaid-shaped couch.

And a photo album filled with images of Condoleezza Rice.

Huh?

Apparently, the infamous Libyan leader's fondness for Rice was well-known -- according to the Washington Post, he told Al-Jazeera in 2007:

"I support my darling black African woman. I admire and am very proud of the way she leans back and gives orders to the Arab leaders ... Leezza, Leezza, Leezza. ... I love her very much. I admire her and I'm proud of her because she's a black woman of African origin."

Well, isn't that nice.

We're sure Rice was flattered -- of course by "flattered," we mean unbelievably uncomfortable and creeped out. In any case, as Jezebel's Irin Carmon points out, the timing couldn't be better for "Leezza."

Alongside Thursday's reports of the album, Rice's publisher also announced her memoir's November release date, "which might well have details of [her 2008] dinner with the dictator, since the warming of relations with Libya was considered a diplomatic coup at the time."

Rebels Found An Entire Album Of Condoleeza Rice Photos In Qaddafi's Palace

The rebels first look into Muammar Qaddafi's palatial compound has pulled back the curtain on the private life of the Libyan dictator, and the findings are more even more bizarre than imagined.

Today, the ransacking turned up a photo album with pictures of former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice on every page. The book even includes a picture of Qaddafi with Rice during her 2008 visit to Tripoli, back when the U.S. and Libya were friends.

If the photo collection is any indication, Qaddafi apparently developed a little crush on the U.S. senior diplomat.

"I support my darling black African woman," he said in a 2007 interview with Al-Jazeera. "Leeza, Leeza, Leeza...I love her very much."

Rebels Storm Qaddafi's Compound In Tripoli

Reuters reports Libyan rebels are firing into air inside the Qaddafi compound in Bab al-Aziziya in celebration.

A Russian official says he spoke to Qaddafi by phone and that he says he is in Tripoli and will fight to the end, according to Reuters.

Libyan rebels have gained control of much of Tripoli, but loyalist units are digging in and fighting back.

While many believe the fall of Qaddafi is close, he remains at large and his son Saif al-Islam made a surprise appearance at the Rixos hotel Tuesday taking journalists on a tour of the city.

Following the tour he spoke to loyalists throughout Tripoli.

Meantime rebels are rounding up suspected loyalists causing endless anxiety to Tripoli residents.
