PHOTOS: Urban Life And History Mix In New York City's Apartments

When looking at the residential architecture of New York, it's necessary to split it into two groups: urban homes and suburban/country homes.

Here we look at the first, which encompasses apartments, lofts, and townhouses. Most of the examples that follow are lofts, because they are such a unique part of New York City's transformation from an industrial to a post-industrial city.

New York is host to a good deal of stunning new architecture, but it also has a strong tradition of preservation that embraces conversions of old buildings into new uses. Dealing with that history inside is one aspect of the interiors in this ideabook.

EA Sports Pissed Off The Nicest Guy In NBA History

NBA legend Bill Russell is known for his big smile and trademark laugh. But he's is doing neither since EA Sports used his likeness without permission or compensation.

And now Russell is suing the video game maker as well as the NCAA.

Russell will merge his lawsuit with former UCLA star Ed O'Bannon's.

O'Bannon's lawsuit was filed on behalf of other former NCAA players and alleges that the NCAA and EA Sports "unlawfully foreclosed former Division I men’s basketball and football players from receiving any compensation related to the commercial use of their images and likenesses."

The lawsuit may face an uphill battle as similar suits have been dismissed recently. In one case, the judge ruled that EA Sports' first amendment right of free expression outweighed former Rutgers quarterback Ryan Hart's control over his likeness.

Throughout history much of the world has been ruled by empires.

To be considered an empire an expanse of land must be politically led by either a monarch, an emperor, or be an oligarchy.

As the decline of the U.S. is being hailed in the news and opinion of the world, we thought it would be interesting to look at the biggest empires of the past.

Aside from their leadership model, the only other thing they all have in common is that each of them disappeared.

Sebastian Janikowski Just Tied The Record For The Longest Field Goal In NFL History

Two Monday Night Football games means an extra chance for amazing and historic play.

Tom Brady had a 99-yard touchdown pass earlier tonight and in the second half of the double header, Oakland kicker Sebastian Janikowski nailed a 63-yard field goal, tying the NFL record shared by Tom Dempsey and Jason Elam.

Both Elam and Janikowski booted their kicks in the thin air of Denver. Check out tonight's drive that ended the first half:

Qaddafi's Heat Seeking Missiles And Other Notorious Missing Weapons From History

Massive amounts of surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) have vanished from Libyan weapon stockpiles and flooded local markets to such a degree that prices for the illegal arms are actually dropping.

According to The New York Times, at least one weapons cache at a schoolbook warehouse had been ransacked, with numerous SA-7 and newer SA-24 missiles missing. 

While international forces find the threat from these weapons credible, France has dispatched additional security to numerous civilian airports, it's impossible to secure all the weapons before falling into dealers hands.

There is some good news, however, the chemical weapons and poison gas belonging to Qaddafi appear to be safe.

This isn't the first time numerous or especially potent weapons have disappeared or gone unaccounted for.

From small-arms to nuclear bombs, nearly every kind of weapon you can think of has been lost by one nation or another.

Roubini Slams Trichet For Making The Biggest Mistake In ECB History

Nouriel Roubini tweets: "I was just interviewed on CNBC:The ECB has to reverse this week its biggest mistake ever, the rate hike that sharply worsened the EZ crisis."

What's amazing about the ECB rate hikes earlier this year is that EVERYONE saw the possibility that it was going to turn into a disaster, in part because it so nicely echoed the blunder from 2008, when Jean-Claude Trichet -- looking at surging oil prices and a weakening banking system -- decided to hike rates in order to fight inflation.

Here's a chart we ran earlier this year, showing what the scene looked like in 2008, as Trichet hiked rates right at the top of the oil peak, only to see the whole thing collapse soon thereafter.

What's actually amazing is that the ECB's rate hikes from this year haven't been reduced yet. With all the ECB has had to do to glue the whole thing together (buying Italian, Portuguese, and Greek bonds), the obvious move -- reversing the rate hiks -- still hasn't been done.
