Here's The Latest Attempt By Spirit Airlines To Exploit Events In The News

Spirit Airlines, which has a history of jumping on whatever current event it can, is at it again.

Now it has come up with a 9-9-9 vacation plan in an ode to GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain's catchy 9-9-9 tax plan.

The airline's last pair of ads that involved politicians were about shamed Congressman Jeff "DM Fail" Weiner and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's respective scandals.

But is this latest one a smart move for the airline?

If anything, Spirit is consistent and knows how to grab your attention. It's a cheap alternative, and has a steadily growing reputation for having crappy customer service and having fees for seemingly every little thing. 

The ads usually don't explicitly take a side (like these do, for example), though this does have the feel of an endorsement, compared to those Schwarzenegger and Weiner ads. Spirit still shouldn't have to worry about instantly alienating half the country.

This Cain promotion also doesn't have an immature sexual innuendo like "The Weiner Sale" and others did, and it's still getting national attention, so maybe it'll hold back on those in the future. Nah, who are we kidding, these are the folks that brought us the MUFF and MILF campaigns, remember? Spirit even had a campaign which featured strippermobiles driving around Los Angeles. Trashy.

All that trashiness and blatant exploitation of whatever is going on in the country is what makes each one of Spirit's ad campaigns light up the news -- but maybe it doesn't need to do both in every campaign to get that exposure. Either way, at this point, there's not much of a brand reputation left for it to worry about anyway.

The Latest Pulse Of Commerce Index Has Some "Alarming News" For Q3 And Beyond

The latest Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index(PCI), a measure of the economy based on diesel fuel consumption, is now available. The published report highlights the 1.0% decline in September with the subtitle "This is alarming news for the third quarter and beyond." Here is an excerpt from the report followed by a pair of charts to illustrate the behavior of this indicator, the second of which adjusts for population growth.

The Ceridian-UCLA Pulse of Commerce Index (PCI), issued today by the UCLA Anderson School of Management and Ceridian Corporation fell 1.0 percent in September on a seasonally and workday adjusted basis, following a 1.4 percent decline in August and a 0.2 percent decline in July. 

In the last three months, the PCI has declined at an annualized rate of 10 percent per year as illustrated in the figure above. This rate of decline has been exceeded only in the deep recession of 2008/09, and equaled only once outside of a recession in March 2000. In other words, since June, trucking activity has been receding at a pace that would be expected to show up in other economic measures soon. The first chart shows the PCI index unadjusted and seasonally adjusted. As we can readily observe, the index had been trending up since end of the Great Recession, but it has yet to achieve the highs of the immediate pre-recession months and now appears stalled. In fact, we're tracking at approximately the same range as November 2005.

In the chart below the 3-month moving average of the PCI is shown with the dotted blue line. The solid line is the same moving average of the data series adjusted for population growth based on the Bureau of Economic Analysis mid-month population data, which is available from the St. Louis Federal Reservehere.

Interpreting the Data

"Alarming news for the third quarter and beyond" is a major theme in the latest Ceridian-UCLA report, a theme that echoes, with less dramatic certainty, the latest recession call of the ECRI. The workday and seasonally adjusted three-month moving average of the index is in fact stalled at the pre-recession level of November 2005. However, on a population adjusted basis, the current index level is about where it was in February 2004.

A Deep Dive Into The Latest Beige Book

The Federal Reserve issued the Beige Book this week.  It confirms a continued slowdown in the economy.  Consider the opening paragraph:

Reports from the twelve Federal Reserve Districts indicated that economic activity continued to expand at a modest pace, though some Districts noted mixed or weakening activity. The St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, and San Francisco Districts all reported either modest or slight expansion. Atlanta said activity continued to expand at a very subdued pace, while Cleveland reported slow growth and New York indicated growth remained sluggish. Economic activity expanded more slowly in the Chicago District and slowed in the Richmond District. Business activity in the Boston and Philadelphia Districts was characterized as mixed, with Philadelphia adding that activity was somewhat weaker overall. Several Districts also indicated that recent stock market volatility and increased economic uncertainty had led many contacts to downgrade or become more cautious about their near-term outlooks.

Expansion is occurring at a "modest pace;" activity is "mixed or weakening;" growth is "slow."  None of the adjectives used to describe economic activity are positive; they all indicate the economy is limping along, probably at just above 0% growth.  Also note that increased economic uncertainty was now creeping into overall perception.  This explains the big drop we've seen in overall consumer sentiment over the last few months and also highlights the impact of the budget debate on the populace.  In short, the summation is extremely concerning.

Overall consumer spending increased slightly in most Districts, but non-auto retail sales were flat or down in some Districts. Hurricane Irene evacuations also produced widespread retail disruptions in late August in the New York District, where activity had been close to or above plan in July before slowing somewhat in early August. The Minneapolis and Kansas City Districts reported moderate increases in non-auto retail sales during the survey period, and sales in the San Francisco District were mixed but up slightly overall. Retail sales were up single-digits from a year ago in the Cleveland and Dallas Districts, although Dallas reported no growth in sales since the previous survey period. Retailers in the Chicago District reported strong back to school sales, while Atlanta said growth slowed in retail sales. The Boston and Philadelphia Districts said sales were flat to down but with sizable variation across stores, while sales mostly weakened in the Richmond and St. Louis Districts. Sales of apparel and luxury items were characterized as strong in several Districts. The Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, and San Francisco Districts all noted sluggish sales of big ticket household items such as furniture and appliances, and contacts in several Districts thought that heightened consumer anxiety was weighing on sales. Contacts in some Districts continued to indicate profit margins were being squeezed by rising input costs, although grocers in the Cleveland District were passing cost increases through to customers.

Like the macro summation, consumer spending is weakening or in one case (Dallas) not growing at all.  Increases are "modest" or "up slightly."  Big ticket items sold "sluggishly" indicating consumers don't want to spend a lot of money right now probably due to the heightened anxiety among consumers regarding the overall economic outlook.  There is little positive in the above paragraph and much to be concerned with.  Considering that consumer spending is 70% of US GDP, this is not welcome news.  

Most Districts reporting on auto sales noted increases in activity, despite lingering supply disruptions for some Japanese nameplates. The Kansas City and Cleveland Districts reportedespecially strong sales of fuel-efficient cars, while luxury vehicles sold well in the Minneapolis District. High demand for used cars was reported in several Districts. The New York and Philadelphia Districts reported somewhat softer auto sales in July, attributed in part to continued supply disruptions, although sales firmed somewhat in August. Tight vehicle supplies were noted in some Districts, and the San Francisco District noted ongoing shortages of Japanese nameplates. Auto contacts in the Dallas District believed the supply issues from Japanese manufacturers should be resolved by the end of September. Auto dealers in several Districts were optimistic about future sales, although contacts in the Philadelphia District said uncertainty clouded the outlook. The Cleveland District noted some easing in auto credit restrictions, and New York said both retail and wholesale auto credit conditions were good.

Auto sales are a paradoxical bright spot.  My guess is three things are happening.  First, many people have been holding onto cars longer, so they are now is a position where they literally have to get a new car.  Secondly, there is the pent-up demand effect caused by the Japanese caused slowdown earlier this year.  Third, it appears the people are now economizing their cars, switching to more fuel efficient cars at the expense of gas guzzlers, anticipating this will save money in the long-run.

Nonfinancial services activity edged higher in most Districts, although Minneapolis and Dallas characterized growth as flat or steady, and New York said conditions deteriorated.Richmond, St. Louis, and San Francisco reported generally solid demand for health-care services, although Richmond noted lower occupancies at senior care facilities due to difficulties among potential residents in selling their homes. Software and information technology firms in the Boston District reported mixed activity since July but expected to return to previous strong growth patterns by late 2011. The San Francisco District reportedexpanded sales for technology service providers due to heightened demand for software, e-books, and mobile applications. In contrast, an information technology contact in the Minneapolis District noted a decline in sales as a result of reduced demand from the government and financial services sectors.

As services make up the larger portion of the US economy, the above news was also good, as it indicates services are picking up some of the slack caused by the drop in manufacturing.  Only two districts reported flat or steady sales and only one showed deteriorating conditions overall.  The above information is consistent withthe latest ISM report, which showed services as expanding slightly, but not aggressively.

Manufacturing conditions were mixed across the country, but the pace of activity slowed in many Districts. The New York, Philadelphia, and Richmond Districts reported declining activity overall, and contacts in the Boston and Dallas Districts noted slowing demand from European customers. Cleveland said factory production was stable, and manufacturing activity in the Atlanta and Chicago Districts grew at a slower pace. Minneapolis, Kansas City, and San Francisco reported slight expansions, and St. Louis said activity continued to increase and that several manufacturers planned to open plants and expand operations in the near future. Most manufacturing contacts were less optimistic than in the previous survey; however, future capital spending plans were solid in a few Districts.

This is consistent with two events.  First, an overall US slowdown, as evidenced by the downward revision to GDP over the last few months.  Second is the overall economic slowdown across the world, where we've seen developing countries (such as China, India and Brazil) engage in a tightening policy to slow inflationary growth in their respective countries.     

Overall, the report shows an economy that probably has just enough activity to keep growth positive -- but just barely.  Between big tickets auto sales and services we have positive growth, and it appears consumers are spending just enough.  However, manufacturing's slowdown is a concern, as this was a primary growth driver over the last two years.  In addition, services are picking up some of the slack, but they are also just above stall speed.

Seesmic Flips The Switch On Its Latest Pivot (CRM)

Seesmic, the startup that makes a suite of popular social media tools, is ready to launch its next product, Seesmic CRM, which will let companies interact with customers in social media. 

Seesmic has a storied history, starting out as a video service and pivoting many, many times to this day. The latest pivot comes after Twitter started cracking down on its developer ecosystem and said it didn't want developers making Twitter apps, which is what Seesmic then was. 

So Seesmic raised $4 million from Salesforce to get into the enterprise side of social media software, and its new product is going to launch at Salesforce's Dreamforce conference. 

Salesforce's partnership with Seesmic is interesting. After all, Seesmic is getting into the CRM space which basically defines Salesforce. Salesforce also recently bought a social media monitoring company, a space where Seesmic was thinking about heading into. Seesmic says it's not competing with Salesforce because it focuses on social media CRM. We'll see. (Of course, the best way to resolve that would be for Salesforce to buy its investee.)

Seesmic and its founder Loic Le Meur sometimes get bad press for pivoting the company again and again and failing to find a business model, but what Le Meur is doing is admirable. This is what startup entrepreneurship is about: bobbing and weaving and adapting. Hopefully for Seesmic, this time will be right.

Millions along the eastern seaboard are bracing for hurricane Irene as the storm barrels toward New York.

The National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for New York City — with the storm center expected to pass over the city around 10 am.

Mass transit systems across the region are shut down — and bridges and tunnels into and out of New York City are beginning to close.

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg said "the time for evacuation is over," and encouraged all city residents to stay indoors and stay away from windows.

Millions along the eastern seaboard are bracing for hurricane Irene as the storm barrels toward New York.

The National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for New York City.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered a mandatory evacuation for "Zone A" low-lying areas — as well as the complete evacuation of the Rockaways.

Mass transit systems across the region will shut down at noon on Saturday in anticipation of the storm.

More than 24,000 flights have been grounded nationwide, ABC News reported.

8:49 AM | Thousands lose power in North Carolina

As of 8:30 a.m. ET, about 200,000 in North Carolina have lost power, according to Progress Energy.

8:34 AM | Irene now sustaining winds of 85 MPH

The latest update from the National Hurricane Center shows Irene, which is currently in coastal North Carolina, is sustaining winds of 85 MPH and moving north-northeast at a pace of 14 MPH.

8:18 AM | New York City changes the location of four evacuation sites

Office of Emergency Management:The Evacuation Center marked on the NYC hurricane evacuation zone map as Aqueduct Racetrack, Rockaway Blvd. and 108th Street, Queens, is being replaced by John Adams High School, 101-01 Rockaway Blvd., Ozone Park, 11417.The Evacuation Center marked on the NYC hurricane evacuation zone map as Christ the King H.S. has been moved to Grover Cleveland H.S. Check the zone finder or call 311 for updated information. The Evacuation Center at JHS 57, 125 Stuyvesant Avenue, Brooklyn, is being closed. 7:37 AM | Irene makes landfall in North Carolina.

Forecasters say that the eye of Irene has made landfall in North Carolina, with the center hitting shore near Cape Lookout, according to the AP.

6:37 AM | Obama declares state of emergency for all counties in New Jersey.

6:07 AM | 90,000 are already without power in N.C. and Virginia

And the storm hasn't even made landfall. It will within hours.

5:26 AM | Irene expected to remain a category 1 or 2 strength hurricane as it approaches New England

The National Weather Service says Irene is expected to remain near the threshold of category 1 and category 2 strength hurricane. While some weakening is expected after Irene reaches the coast of North Carolina, it's expected to remain a hurricane as it churns toward New England.

3:09 AM | Bloomberg says New York City storm surge could be between 6 and 12 feet

Irene has been downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, with wind speed up to 90 mph. It is currently about 60 miles off the coast of North Carolina, approaching at 14 mph.The storm is now projected to hit New York sometime after 8 a.m. Sunday.

3:05 AM | Obama has now declared a state of emergency for all counties in Connecticut

1:11 AM | Obama has declared states of emergency in Virginia and Massachusetts.

1:09 AM | Irene is heading northest at 13 mph with winds up to 100 mph — still on track to hit NY tomorrow.

Landfall is now expected around 9 a.m. just east of Cape Lookout, N.C. The first rain bands of the hurricane are starting to hit the coasts of South and North Carolina.

11:26 PM | President Obama is back on the mainland, with just hours to go before Irene makes landfall.

Air Force One just landed at Andrews Air Force base, and the First Family is now on the way to the White House. According to White House pool reports, it was a full flight back from the Cape Cod airport, although no word which members of Obama's team were on board.

11:07 PM | NCS says Hurricane Irene still a HUGE Category 2 with maximum winds up to 100 mph.

The hurricane is still forecast to move near or over the mid-Atlantic Saturday and then into southern New England on Sunday. It is forecast to remain a hurricane until Sunday. According to the latest NCS update, Irene is enormous, extending 90 mph out. Tropical storm winds from the hurricane extend out up to 290 miles. "Extremely dangerous" storm surges up to 11 feet above ground level are expected in North Carolina tomorrow morning. Surges will raise water levels as much as 8 feet above ground level along the coast stretching from the North Carolina-Virginia border all the way to Cape Cod.

10:05 PM | Irene to make landfall in North Carolina tomorrow morning.

Irene is speeding towards the coast of North Carolina at 100 mph, with an expected landfall between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday morning between Beaufort and Atlantic Beach, N.C., CNN reports. Now a Category 2 storm, Irene is expected to weaken to a borderline Category 1 (max. wind speed 95 mph) when it hits land. New York's Port Authority announced tonight that all airports will close at noon tomorrow.

9:01 PM | Amtrak cancels more trains, including all trains in the Northeast on Sunday.

Service reductions begin tomorrow, affecting lines from Washington to Boston, New York to Harrisburg, New Haven to Springfield, Mass., New York to Albany, St. Albans, Vt. to Washington, Raleigh to Charlotte, and regional service in Virginia. All trains in the Northeast will be cancelled on Sunday.

8:33 PM | Now there is a tornado watch in North Carolina.

As the hurricane approaches North Carolina, the National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for areas along the state's coastline until 5 a.m. tomorrow. Gusts from the tropical storm are already hitting coastal communities and islands. Also, the New York Times is allowing free access to its storm coverage.

7:23 PM | Residents ignoring Bloomberg's evacuation order.

AFP is reporting that thousands of residents of the Rockaways (a barrier island south of Long Island) are defying NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg's evacuation order. Bloomberg issued a mandatory evacuation of the entire area by tomorrow afternoon — though many residents say they will stay. The area is particularly at risk because there are only a handful of ingress and egress points — and the entire area is very close to sea level.Read more here.

The President today declared an emergency exists in the State of New York and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from Hurricane Irene beginning on August 25, 2011, and continuing. The President's action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in the counties of Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, and Suffolk. Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent federal funding. W. Craig Fugate, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named Philip E. Parr as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.

From DoD: "Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta directed U.S. Northern Command to provide support as identified by FEMA in light of the projected path of the storm. Fort Bragg, N.C.; Joint Base McGuire - Dix - Lakehurst, N.J.; and Westover Air Reserve Base, Mass., have all been designated as FEMA Incident Support Bases (ISB). As such, we have already prepositioned 225 non-DoD trucks loaded with equipment, food, water, and generators at Bragg. Supplies and equipment are in the process of being moved to the other ISBs now.Additionally, 18 DoD helicopters are deploying to the Northeastern United States to be ready to provide critical life saving and life sustaining support should it be needed. These aircraft are being pre-positioned close enough to render swift assistance, but out of the way of the Irene's path.Panetta said, "As Americans located up and down the East Coast make preparations for Hurricane Irene's landfall, it is important to note that the men and women of the Defense Department are working closely with FEMA as part of the larger government preparations and response to Hurricane Irene."At this time, approximately 101,000 National Guard members are available to the governors of the East Coast states, territories and the District of Columbia if needed."
