Without including money lost to shutdowns, evacuations, and general disorder, hurricane Irene has left an estimated $7 billion to $13 billion in damages over 10 East Coast states.
According to ABC News, the Consumer Federation of America says wind damage may total about $5 billion and flooding $2 billion.
That's the low end. Peter Morici of the University of Maryland says $20 billion in damage and economic losses is possible in the weeks to come.
"The East Coast has a lot in common with New Orleans," Morici told ABC. "There are a lot of low lying areas, the flood levels are almost breaking records."
The damage is still less than it could have been. Tudor's gave a 35 percent chance Saturday that total damages would be at $40 billion.
In fact, Cumberland Advisors Chairman David Kotok says it could be a stimulus (via Politico): “We are now upping our estimate of fourth-quarter GDP in the U.S. economy. Billions will be spent on rebuilding and recovery. That will put some people back to work, at least temporarily.”
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has not yet released any federal damage estimates.

The National Weather Service has issued a hurricane warning for New York City — with the storm center expected to pass over the city around 10 am.
Mass transit systems across the region are shut down — and bridges and tunnels into and out of New York City are beginning to close.
NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg said "the time for evacuation is over," and encouraged all city residents to stay indoors and stay away from windows.

Google Crisis Response shows evacuation routes all up and down the east coast.
Stormpulse is a good way to keep up with rapidly changing forecasts.
Mayor Bloomberg posted a NYC evacuation map yesterday. The New York Times has an interactive copy that will let you search your zip code and find your evacuation zone.
Of course, if you want instant news, the best place to search is on Twitter. Hundreds of tweets with the hashtag #hurricane are being written per minute. You can also see photos people have posted of the storm in their area.

Hurricane Irene is passing through New York City right now.
NY1 is reporting heavy rains around various parts of the city and high waters along the Hudson and Coney Island.
I took a walk around Brooklyn Heights earlier and while there are a few small trees down, many people are out walking their dogs. Over here it mostly it just feels like a heavy rainstorm except there are very few cars on the streets.
I snapped some pictures.

And here is what Manhattan looked like last night around 5pm.
Meanwhile the East river is very high. If you look closely you can see where it's risen past the barriers that separate it from parts of the Brooklyn Bridge park and Pier 6.
That's Governor's Island off to the left. In the distance you can sort of make out the Statue of Liberty
Parts of Brooklyn Bridge park have overflowed.
However, even a hurricane will not keep New Yorkers inside their (tiny) apartments.

Right now New York City is strangely empty after 375,000 were evacuated and most people buckle down at home. The storm is supposed to hit here late Saturday or early Sunday.

This nearly-last weekend of summer is usually a big one for New York City's $31 billion tourism industry.
But Hurricane Irene has changed all that.
Now that nearly 400,000 New Yorkers have been asked to evacuate, and the rest stayed inside as the transportation system ground to a halt, the landscape looks quite different.

For Wall Street, it's business as usual.
The New York Stock Exchange is planning to open on Monday even as hurricane Irene charges up the eastern seaboard toward New York.
"Our plan is to ring that bell Monday morning at 9:30," Lou Pastina, the head of floor operations for the NYSE told CNBC.
As part of the NYSE's contingency plan, Pastina said some traders and people at member firms have already booked hotel rooms.
He also said the NYSE has generators for power if necessary.
What's more is if there is a delay, the NYSE also has electronic exchanges such as Arca so trading can take still take place.
Yesterday mayor Michael Bloomberg issued the first mandatory evacuation in the city's history for low-lying areas prone to storm surge and flooding.
Those in what has been designated as zone A will have to evacuate by 5 p.m. ET on Saturday.
The NYSE is not in zone A, but banks such as Goldman Sachs on 200 West St. and Citigroup's TriBeCa offices on 388 Greenwich St. are located in the evacuation zone. Firms such as Nomura Securities, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management and RBC Capital Markets are also in Zone A.
Public transportation might also be an issue for those trying to commute to the city.
The MTA also announced buses, subways, Long Island Railroad and Metro-North will cease operations Saturday at noon.
