Dr. Pepper Wants Men To Drink Its Low-Cal Soda So Badly It Tells Women To Stay Away

NEW YORK (AP) — Dudes don't drink diet.

Or at least that's the idea behind Dr Pepper Ten, a 10-calorie soft drink Dr Pepper Snapple Group is rolling out on Monday with a macho ad campaign that proclaims "It's not for women." The soft drink was developed after the company's research found that men shy away from diet drinks that aren't perceived as "manly" enough.

To appeal to men, Dr Pepper made its Ten drink 180 degrees different than Diet Dr Pepper. It has calories and sugar unlike its diet counterpart. Instead of the dainty tan bubbles on the diet can, Ten will be wrapped in gunmetal grey packaging with silver bullets. And while Diet Dr Pepper's marketing is women-friendly, the ad campaign for Ten goes out of its way to eschew women.

For instance, there's a Dr Pepper Ten Facebook page for men only. And TV commercials are heavy on the machismo, including one spot that shows muscular men in the jungle battling snakes and bad guys and appear to shoot lasers at each other.

"Hey ladies. Enjoying the film? Of course not. Because this is our movie and this is our soda," a man says as he attempts to pour the soda into a glass during a bumpy ATV ride. "You can keep the romantic comedies and lady drinks. We're good."

Dr Pepper Ten is not the first diet soda aimed at men. (Think: Coke Zero and Pepsi Max.) But Dr Pepper Ten's ad campaign is the first to be so overt about courting men who want to drink a soda with fewer calories. The ads come at a time when overall sales in the $74 billon soft drink industry are slowing as more Americans buy healthier options like juice and bottled water. Volume has fallen from slightly over 10 billion cases in 2005 to 9.4 billion cases in 2010, according to Beverage Digest data.

"Regular sugared soft drinks have declined in recent years, and some consumers have taste issues with some of the diet sodas," said John Sicher, editor and publisher of Beverage Digest.

Dr Pepper said men, in particular, are dissatisfied with the taste and image of diet drinks. The company wouldn't disclose the formula of Dr Pepper Ten, but said that the drink has 10 calories and 2 grams of sugar, which gives it a sweeter taste. Dr Pepper said there are 23 flavors in its regular soda, (which has 150 calories and 27 grams of sugar per can) and Dr Pepper Ten contains all of them.

The company, which declined to give figures for how much was spent on the campaign, also worked hard to craft a macho message. The company said ads for Dr Pepper Ten will air on all major networks, FX and ESPN during college football games.

A Facebook page for the drink contains an application that allows it to exclude women from viewing content, which includes games and videos aimed at being "manly." For instance, there's a shooting gallery where you shoot things like high heels and lipstick, for example. There is also a "man quiz" with questions on activities like fishing and hunting.

Whether the ads will resonate with men remains to be seen. Paul McDonald, 25, who works in green energy contracts in Berkley, Calif., says he drinks soda labeled "diet" and doesn't think there is any stigma attached.

"No one has ever made fun of me for drinking a Diet Coke, and I'm on a rugby team we make fun of each other for everything," he said.

And women? Jim Trebilcock, executive vice president of marketing for Dr Pepper, said he's not worried that they'll be offended by the campaign. The drink and marketing were tested in six different markets across the country before being rolled out nationally, and women weren't offended, he said. In fact, about 40 percent of people who have tried the soda so far are women.

"Women get the joke," he said. "'Is this really for men or really for women?' is a way to start the conversation that can spread and get people engaged in the product."

The Brazilian Government Wants To Ban TV Ads Featuring Almost Naked Gisele Bundchen

x You have successfully emailed the post.

THE BRAZILIAN GOVERNMENT is looking to ban a television ad campaign featuring supermodel Gisele Bundchen in underwear and high heels because it believes the ads are sexist.

The adverts for Hope Lingerie shows Bunchen delivering her husband some bad news, for example that she has crashed the car or gone over her credit card limit.

When she confesses to her husband in full clothes, the Portuguese word for “wrong” flashes up on screen. But when she is just in her heels and underwear the word for “right” comes up on screen with a voiceover adding: “You are Brazilian, use  your charm”.

Check it out:

The Telegraph reports that the TV spots have not gone down well with the country’s Ministry for Women which has asked the advertising authorities to ban the ads which it says “reinforces the erroneous stereotyping of women as sex objects.”

Bundchen is one of Brazil’s most successful exports and is tipped to be the world’s first billionaire supermodel. She has not yet commented according to the Guardian.

But the company is reported to have said in a statement that the ads were never intended to be sexist but rather a depiction “of the everyday life of a couple.”

The NFL Wants All Its Fans To Be Frisked From Head To Toe

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Seattle Seahawks NFL Football Stadium" />The NFL's new security measures call for all fans attending games this season to be frisked from the ankles up.

The new "enhanced" regulations were supposed to be in place from Week 1, but obviously did not help in New Jersey, where a Dallas fan snuck a stun gun into the Meadowlands.

Previous rules required fans to be searched from the waist up, but the new guidelines includes the knees and ankles... a popular spot for holding boozes and weapons.

That's about 16.6 million pat downs for all the people expected to attend an NFL game in person this year.

Twitter Wants To Be (And Will Be) The Next Big Media Company

x You have successfully emailed the post.

Yesterday Twitter announced some big numbers. The important ones:

100 million active users (i.e. who log in once a month), and 50 million daily logged in users.40% of active users don't tweet.Twitter is focused on advertising as its business model. They do data licensing deals and the like, but they're focused on advertising as their huge business.

What this all works out to: Twitter wants to be (and will be) the next big media company.

Twitter is basically TV at this point: unlike social networks, most people are here to follow brands, entertainers and events they like, not interact with their friends (although they also do that, but it increasingly seems to be secondary), and will increasingly do so with commercial interruption.

Is that vision realistic? In a word, yes.

For a few reasons:

Twitter won't stop growing. Twitter had 400 million unique visitors to just Twitter.com last month. Twitter active users are up 80% from the beginning of the year which, given how big Twitter already is, is astounding. It seems that Twitter is both adding new users and making existing users more active. Given Twitter's network effect, there is no reason to believe that growth won't continue.Twitter is an amazing broadcast medium. The power of live, microchunked content is amazing. As we saw during events like the death of Osama Bin Laden, Twitter is often both the fastest and most entertaining and interesting way to follow live events. People can follow exactly the people and brands they're interested in. To anyone with a phone, Twitter is your world in your pocket.

REAL LIFE SUPERPOWER: This Kickstarter Project Wants To Help You See Through Objects

x You have successfully emailed the post. Jon Rodriguez addresses human vision as a problem. We only see in two dimensions -- what would 3D vision be like?

His Kickstarter project, Voxel Vision, aims to design a system that lets humans see "within and behind solid objects within any virtual world."

In a practical sense, Rodriguez writes that his system could enable surgeons to "see the entire interior volume of a patient," police officers to "see within rooms and behind walls to avoid an ambush," and cell biologists could even "visualize the entire interior of a cell."

It sounds like black magic, but Rodriguez has already raised more than $3,500 of his $6,000 goal. (A donation of $3,000 will fetch you the Voxel Vision hardware before it lands on the general market.)

Rodriguez dissects what his project is all about and how it works in much more (complex) detail on the Kickstarter page and on this Quora page.

Following last week's case of the missing iPhone 5, Apple is looking for two product security guards that will make sure future Apple prototypes don't fall into the wrong hands.

9to5 Mac says there's a new job posting from Apple requesting two experienced security guards. The job description says the guards are responsible "for overseeing the protection of, and managing risks to, Apple’s unreleased products and related intellectual property."

GROUPON CANCELS IPO ROADSHOW, SEC Wants Answers On Leaked Memo

x You have successfully emailed the post. Andrew MasonGroupon has canceled its IPO roadshow, which was scheduled for next week, Anupreeta Das of the Wall Street Journal reports.

The SEC has reportedly been asking questions about the internal email that was leaked two weeks ago that struck many observers, including us, as likely violating the SEC's pre-IPO "quiet period" rules.

Two weeks ago, infuriated by constant media bashing of his company, Groupon CEO Andrew Mason wrote a long email to Groupon employees laying out his case for why the company was in great shape.

This email took on critics point by point, arguing that Groupon had plenty of cash, was not a Ponzi scheme, and would become a massive and profitable company. The email was immediately leaked to Kara Swisher at All Things D, prompting concerns about the quiet period.

In 1996, Wired was forced to pull its own IPO after a similar memo was leaked to the Internet.
